Until 31 October

Born In Cork, Diarmuid graduated from the Dublin Institute of Technology BAVA , Sherkin arts programme in 2012. Since then he has exhibited regularly in Cork and Dublin. He is represented by the Taylor Galleries in Dublin, McKenna Gallery in Omagh, Co. Tyrone and Blue House Gallery in Cork. He has exhibited in the Boyle Arts Festival, RHA Annual exhibitions, and was the inaugural winner of the Anita Young Award for a mid career artist at the 191st RHA Annual Exhibition. He was awarded the de Vere’s prize for an artwork of distinction at the 194th RHA Annual Exhibition. His painting “The Avenue” was purchased by the OPW in 2024 as part of their permanent collection.

DOGS OF LAVIT – PIRI

Piranesi is an 11 week old Shih Tzu / Biewer Terrier cross. He is quite new to the world but he already dislikes baths. He is very soft and clean so baths are working for him. ‘Piri’ likes chewing things and his best friend is Frank the Chihuahua (see first dog of Lavit post). Piranesi’s human Mom Katrielle is a photographer which is handy because he has his own Instagram account . Its early days in terms of a defined artistic preference but Diarmuid Breen’s Pink Cloud looks like a nice place to hide.

Dogs are very welcome in the gallery as long as they are on a leash. Our Gallery Director Brian is particularlykeen to meet and greet our four-legged audience members and would encourage you to bring them in rather than leave them outside. Dogs, as well as our two-legged visitors, find the gallery very quiet and calming compared to the hustle and bustle of the city outside. We want to know all about your dog and we will do our best to show them art that gets their attention so you can buy it for them.

Until 31 October

"I create paintings that explore work and the human experience of working. My work focuses on the routines, pressures, and expectations that shape everyday life, often highlighting how work can become repetitive, exhausting, or overwhelming.

Alongside this, my paintings include a quieter subplot about the importance of free time. I am interested in the contrast between moments of labor and moments of rest, and how rare and meaningful unstructured time can be. These moments are shown as pauses, empty spaces, or shifts in mood that suggest relief, reflection, or freedom. They represent the human need to exist beyond constant responsibility.

I use paint, color, and composition to emphasize repetition and structure within work environments, while allowing freer marks and softer elements to appear in scenes of rest. This contrast mirrors the tension between obligation and personal time. Through my work, I hope viewers reflect on their own relationship with work and consider the value of rest as an essential part of being human. "

Overall Diarmuid Breen’s work gives us pause for thought, about our own lives and the balance we strike between work and play. While many of us were enjoying the fine weather of recent months Diarmuid was toiling away at home in Monsterevin. His home had become his citadel for a time, in order to create this incredible body of work. This show was 7 months in the making. It runs until 31 October. Not to be missed

JULIA DLUGOSZ LIFTS THE LID ON HER PROCESS

Julia Dlugosz wrapped up her vaults installation 'Vessels' on Saturday afternoon with an extremely informative talk about her wonderful ceramics which included work from third year, fourth year and brand new work from 2026. All the work is very accomplished so it was fascinating to hear about the challenges she faced in the making process and the various solutions she came up with to make it work. It was also very impressive to hear how contemporary content was so sensitively and seamlessly combined with more ancient forms and motifs.

Julia was the 2025 recipient of the Cork Arts Society Vaults Award. This new award gives a graduate of MTU Crawford College of Art & Design the opportunity to exhibit in the unique vault spaces at Lavit Gallery.

The 2026 vaults programme has now come to and end and will resume in May 2027.

The 2026 Cork Arts Society t/a Lavit Gallery visual arts programme is kindly supported by Arts Grants from the Arts Council of Ireland and Cork City Council.

DIARMUID BREEN REVEALS ALL

We had a great conversation on Saturday, during which Diarmuid told us about his artistic journey and all the twists and turns that finally allowed him to focus on his practice full time, whilst keeping a toe in the door of his other profession as an engineer. It was also fantastic to get further insights into his process and the ideas behind the work. Thank you to everyone who came along.

Diarmuid chooses to utilise historic found photographs as source material for his characters.
