NEW IRISH ART 2026 IS OPEN

Thank you to everyone who came along yesterday evening for the opening of the second edition of New Irish Art, and to Bubble Brothers for the lovely w**e. Congratulations to all the artists involved. It is an impressive display of talent.

In Autumn 2026 Lavit Gallery continues its new group exhibition format focusing on a selection of new work by artists working across the Island of Ireland. Lavit Gallery is very loyal to its Cork artists but having a national reach is also important so that we can continue to stimulate and inspire our audience and customers with a variety of talent.

The artists participating in the 2026 edition of New Irish Art are Collin Crotty, Róisín de Buitléar, Stephen Doyle, Gabhann Dunne, Vanessa Jones, Vera Klute RHA, Michael Quane RHA, Michael Kobuladze, Ailbhe Ní Bhriain, Bennie Reilly, John O’Reilly and Charles Tyrrell. Curated by Brian Mac Domhnaill.

Not all the featured artists are based in their native counties or even their country of origin and that is another important part this exhibition model. The ‘new Irish’ part of the title also refers to the ideal of a less parochial and more fluid and multi-cultural Irish society that extends to our national identity. In a commercial context creating a local market for new or unfamiliar art can be a challenge given the largely traditional, conservative and tribal nature of the Irish art market but it is important that all good work is given a platform and that we encourage tastes to broaden locally and nationally.

As a not-for-profit arts organisation and registered charity Cork Arts Society, trading as Lavit Gallery, greatly appreciates the support of our colleagues running sales-based galleries in Dublin. Included in this exhibition are artists represented by private commercial galleries.

“The work for this exhibition looks at the female body as it collides with institutional policies and procedures. The sculptures reflect the traumatised birth with its intrusive procedures resulting in the loss of bodily autonomy. Women’s bodies are a landscape, a site of contention and control. It is within maternity institutions where interventions, policy, procedure and tolerances dominate and leave women outside of decisions made about their bodies. My figures express the rawness of birth, the altered body as new unfamiliar landscape. A body left to deal with the consequences of ‘too much too soon’ (non-evidence-based interventions) and too little too late (below evidence-based standards, or care withheld or unavailable until too late to help)’ ” Lorraine Parker, 2026.

BUBBLE BROTHERS BRING US TO PIEDMONT

For tomorrows opening reception of NEW IRISH ART, our friends at Bubble Brothers are taking us to Piedmont Italy, more specifically the Agostino Pavia & Figli w**ery. Their relationship with the Pavias goes back to the early days of Bubble Brothers. Agostino Pavia's commitment to Barbera w**e has been handed on to his sons Mauro and Giuseppe, whose experience and skill yield w**es of considerable energy and charm from their ten or so hectares, nearly all in the commune of Agliano Terme.

On the menu for Thursday is of course a Barbere d'Asti, but also a Grignolino, a chilled pale red w**e and last but not least a Cortese Gasia for the white.

Thank you to Billy and the team for their considered selections. It is always an absolute treat to sample their goods and hear the stories behind the w**es and their producers.

Please note that the Summer Exhibition ends tomorrow, Saturday 29th August. The gallery will be closed tomorrow from 1-2pm for lunch and de-install will begin from 4pm so please come before that time if you would like to see the show.

Running over six weeks and featuring 30-40 artists and makers the Summer Exhibition at Lavit Gallery is an annual group show featuring painting, print, photography, sculpture and craft. There is a Cork emphasis but new artists from across the country are invited each year.
