For this month’s theme, we’re celebrating Cork Harbour! 🌊

With Cork Harbour Festival & Ocean to City running through part of June, it’s the perfect time to shine a light on one of Cork’s greatest treasures – our stunning harbour, which is the second largest natural harbour in the world!

To start things off, we’re turning back the clocks to the 1800s with a scene of Patrick’s Quay and a flotilla of yachts in the harbour.

From gorgeous views to rich maritime history, we can’t wait to share all things Cork Harbour this month. ☀️

We had a wonderful time on Saturday at the opening event of To Land: Living Roots Awaken, now open at Highlanes Drogheda. Thank you to everyone who joined us!

To Land is a vibrant exhibition drawn from the rich collection of Crawford Art Gallery’s contemporary artworks, and explores how identity is shaped by our relationship with land, history, and memory, with artwork chosen around themes of displacement, Ireland’s ancient culture, and the lingering effects of colonialism.

The exhibition will be running in Highlanes Gallery until 9 August as part of our ongoing Touring & Sharing program during our temporary closure.

Is lá iontach é do cheolchoirm!

With tonight’s Kneecap concerts causing buzz around the city, we wanted to share this artwork by Íde Ní Shúilleabháin, who is a member of Crawford Supported Studios.

Curious about people, Íde draws people she sees on social media and in books and magazines. Pictured here are Moglaí Bap from Kneecap and Radie Peat from Lankum drinking Beamish in Grogans Castle Lounge, Dublin.

For more info on Íde's distinctive artwork, see her artist profile at the link in the comments below!

We’re so dazzled by the last few days of sun, we don’t know what to do with ourselves!

It only seems right to celebrate the gorgeous weather whilst also wrapping up our May theme with this beautiful work, Studio Garden by William John Leech.

Will you be getting out into the sun this evening?

⛵️ Set Sail and Create: Cruinniú Children’s Workshops

Anchors Aweigh! ⚓️ For Cruinniú na nÓg, we’re excited to host two children’s workshops with a playful maritime theme for 3 - 5 years at 12pm, and 6 - 10 years at 2pm at the Cork City Library on Saturday 6 June!

Inspired by artworks from Crawford Art Gallery’s collection that explore Cork’s rich maritime history and books in the library on similar themes, this imaginative session will allow children to create their own ships using recycled materials. This event is free, but booking is required. Children must be accompanied by an adult. To reserve your space, click the link in the comments below!

The next work for our theme of this month is ‘Continental Street Scene’ (1907) by Beatrice Gubbins, a beautiful study in light, shadow, and colour!

The shift from the warm palette of whites, blues, and earth tones of the sun-drenched streets to the cooler shaded areas of the buildings and corners, this work showcases the fluidity of Gubbins’s style.

Gubbins was born deaf and received treatment in London three or four years after making this painting. You can find a link to an ISL resource on Gubbins in the comments below!
