Struàn Bell | Artist Residency at Uillinn

1 September – 1 October 2026
Studio open to the public: Tuesdays & Wednesdays

Today we welcomed one of our new Artists in Residence - Struàn Bell

During the residency at Uillinn, Struàn Bell explores sculpture, material, memory and meaning through sustained experimentation. Working across sculpture, drawing and writing, Bell develops new sculptural reliefs using materials and construction methods to explore speculative systems, constructed spaces and the contemporary Sublime.

Visit the studio on Tuesdays & Wednesdays to see the work develop.

This residency is supported by a 2025 Visual Arts Bursary from the Arts Council of Ireland, and by a Sample-Studios ‘Sample 15’ Artist Bursary.

Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre acknowledges the financial support of The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon in making these residencies possible.

We are deeply saddened to learn of Elmarie Mawe's passing today. There are few people who championed the arts with the commitment, passion, knowledge, and generosity that Elmarie showed in everything she did. For over 2 decades, Elmarie has hosted The Arts House on Cork's 96fm with her husband and collaborator Conor Tallon, lending a vibrant voice and a valuable platform to the arts in Cork. We have been honoured to have our programmes featured on The Art House in recent years and we're as grateful for this support as we are to have been part of Elmarie's work. Her loss will be felt very deeply.

We extend our sympathies to her husband Conor, her family and friends, and her colleagues in this difficult time. May Elmarie rest in peace.

Congratulations to our member Barbara Diener on the opening of her latest solo exhibition ‘The Rocket’s Red Glare’ in Sample-Studios Gallery, The Lord Mayor’s Pavilion tonight, with opening remarks by Dr. .roddy Digital Humanities at UCC

‘The Rocket’s Red Glare’ unfolds across Diener’s photographs accompanied by archival materials which together explore the complex history of N**i engineer-turned-NASA rocket scientist Wernher von Braun and Diener’s own German family heritage. Diener’s interest in Mixed Realities challenges conventional approaches to documentary photography and interrogates the blurred line between fact and fiction as well as the use of history to construct narratives.

📅 The exhibition continues until 3 October. Open Tue-Sat 11am-5pm, Sun 12-5pm

Our pilot programme RAW programme kicked off today in Sample-Studios, facilitated by Ashleigh Ellis Eco Artist, Sample-Studios member, and Sample 15 Artist Bursary Recipient. Today’s workshop, ‘Growing Your Practice’, explored creating inks and dyes from plant materials.

The RAW Programme (Reduce Artist Waste) is an innovative new art and sustainability programme, designed to empower artists to use natural materials and develop more sustainable practices. This training is made available to our membership of over 200 artists for free through generous support from Cork City Council Circular Economy/Waste Prevention Grant and Local Environmental Action Fund (LEAF) 2026.

Member Monday ✨
Barbara Diener is in this week’s spotlight as her new Solo Exhibition ‘The Rocket’s Red Glare’ opens THIS WEEK in Sample-Studios Gallery: The Lord Mayor’s Pavilion. All are welcome to attend the Opening Reception on Thursday 27 August from 5-7pm. The exhibition continues until 3 October.

‘The Rocket’s Red Glare’ explores the life and legacy of German rocket scientist Wernher von Braun, a N**i engineer who later became a celebrated NASA scientist. Drawing on this complicated history and Diener’s own relationship with her German heritage, the exhibition explores the sometimes selective presentation of the past through archival material, Diener’s own photography, and Mixed Realities which raise questions about the boundaries between fact and fiction.

Born and raised in Germany, Barbara Diener is a Cork-based visual artist working in photography and moving image. Her internationally exhibited work has received numerous grants and residencies, and has been published by Daylight Books and Fw: Books. She relocated to Cork in 2023 and is Photographic Collections Librarian at UCC Library.
