On this day in 1915, the RMS Lusitania met a tragic fate off the coast of Ireland. Struck by a German U-boat torpedo just 10 miles from the Old Head of Kinsale, the grand ocean liner sank within 18 minutes, claiming 1,198 lives—many of whom were never recovered. Only 761 survivors were rescued and brought to Cobh.

The disaster served as a turning point in World War I, highlighting the devastating impact of unrestricted submarine warfare. More than a century later, the Lusitania stands as a solemn reminder of the lives lost and the enduring lessons of wartime history.

Today, we honour and remember those who lost their lives, ensuring their stories are never forgotten.

Cobh Lusitania Commemoration-all are welcome to attend both events.

Lusitania Commemoration Ceremony – Sunday, 10th May (Cobh)

Cobh Tourism will host its annual Lusitania Commemoration Ceremony on Sunday, 10th May, marking 111 years since the sinking of the RMS Lusitania in 1915. The event honours the 1,201 people who lost their lives when the passenger liner was torpedoed by a German U‑boat just 11 miles south of the Old Head of Kinsale.

Ceremony Schedule
📍 Cobh Town Centre – 2:30pm
The commemoration begins in Casement Square at the Lusitania Peace Memorial.
A Colour Party from the O.N.E., along with representatives of the Royal Naval Association and various maritime and historical groups, will assemble and take part in the ceremony of prayers, musical honours and wreath laying.

📍 Old Church Cemetery – 3:30pm
Proceedings then move to the Old Church Cemetery, where 145 victims were laid to rest on 10th May 1915 in three mass graves and several individual plots.
A wreath‑laying ceremony will take place at the Glass Memorials, which honour the 170 victims buried in the cemetery.

Public Attendance
Members of the public are warmly encouraged to attend both parts of the ceremony to pay tribute to those who perished in one of the most significant maritime tragedies of the First World War.
