Birr ART & Artists

Birr ART & Artists This page primarily promotes the arts and working artists within the Birr area. This page has been created, primarily to promote the working artists of Birr.

It is so, that 80% of County Offaly's artists live in and around this charming town in the Midlands. We hope that through promoting our local artists, it encourages local people to buy something made locally and created by hand. But just as importantly our page has been created to increase awareness of our region's artists nationally and internationally. A number of our 'local artists' have in fac

t exhibited in leading galleries and some of their works have sold throughout Ireland, and are in collections abroad. But we are more than simple 'painters and sketchers'. A fellow artist of another kind has contributed to this little list, and you can find us all hereabouts, in and around Birr: Musicians and Drummers; Writers of songs and of Poetry and Prose Writers; Calligraphers and Print-makers; Dancers and Animators; Film-makers and Stained-glass makers; Physical Theatre Practitioners (Juggling/Fire-throwing/Rope-walking); Physico-spiritual artists; Designers, Carvers, Potters and Artists in Paper... and of course the Visual Artists. (Please send more if you are one or know another kind of artist nearby.) Originally, the idea of this page was to promote the creative people who are working in the arts: just the 'professional, working artists of Birr and the gallery/exhibition spaces and shops selling our art. However, there are so many of us doing other jobs to earn money such as teaching art, or just greatly involved with community projects. Doing everyday what is way wider than 'the arts' - maybe neglecting the art in which we were schooled or have developed through practice. There are some local (working) artists here who are largely self-taught and others who have been or are going back to college to evolve an aspect of the arts, such as Art Therapy. It seems unfair to exclude others who may be consistently working on their own art and exhibiting (and maybe even selling more than A Professional Working Artist!) but who are professionals in full-time jobs in other fields. The important thing is that this page can help bring a focus upon Birr's artists and their art, inspired by living in this beautiful county of Offaly.

Opportunities for Artists – 2026
As we prepare for Vintage Week, limited venue availability means a slightly different approach this year, while also opening up some exciting new possibilities.
1. Open Submission – Small Works
This year’s Open Submission is for works of 30 x 30 cm. The earlier call gives artists time to create new pieces. Selected artists will also be considered for a solo exhibition in 2027.
2. Arts Trail 2026 – Outdoor Works
We invite proposals for temporary outdoor works. Artists are asked to propose works that engage with the public in creative and accessible ways. We are particularly interested in lightweight suspended installations and textiles. Two secure outdoor venues are also available for more delicate work.

Both opportunities are on this link https://www.birrvintageweek.com/annual-open-submission-exhibition

Birr Theatre & Arts Centre!

This Year's Theme: "A Terrible Beauty"

For Common Ground 2025, we challenge you to explore the profound theme of "A Terrible Beauty." This is an invitation to look closely at the tension between the sublime and the catastrophic, the exquisite and the agonising—where opposing forces converge to create something breathtaking precisely because of its inherent contrast, danger, brokenness, or pain.
This theme is open to your unique interpretation, across all media.

OFFALY ARTIST - upcoming exhibition at BIRR THEATRE & ARTS CENTRE -
Ann Mitchell’s outstanding, atmospheric, exquisite artworks will be adorning the walls this Autumn.
VIEW and follow on Facebook, etc.

I am Ann Mitchell, a portrait artist based in Offaly. I create textured, layered paintings that honour the quiet strength we carry-the resilience softness, and soul that lives in all of us. Each piece I make blends oil, gold leaf, and mixed media to tell stories that are deeply personal, yet universal.
Whether you've just discovered by work or followed it for some time, thank you for being here

It would be wonderful if you signed up to my mailing list for discounts and special offers

“Sign, Symbol, Word”

From stone carvings to digital code, people have always used symbols to make sense of the world. This open call invites artists to play with, disrupt, or reimagine the signs and symbols that shape our experience. How do meaning, form, and context shift when language becomes image, or image speaks like language.
