Join us as Sarah McKenna Dunne launches her powerful new book exploring the people of Cavan and surrounding counties who hold “the cure” — an ancient tradition still alive in modern Ireland.
For two years, Sarah travelled the region meeting healers, collecting stories, and asking:

🔸 Who are the people with cures?
🔸 How did they get them?
🔸 Why do they continue the practice?
🔸 Can these traditions be passed on?

Featuring artwork by Margaret McKenna and photography by Lorraine Teevan, this book offers a rare insight into a disappearing tradition.

Our swift boxes are up!

Many thanks to Michael from BirdWatch Ireland for helping us to install swift boxes on the museum building - we might be a bit late for this year's population, but hopefully they'll scope them out for next year!

Swifts are a summer visitor to Ireland arriving in late April or early May and departing in early September. Gabhlán gaoithe is the Irish name - literally meaning "martin of the wind" - and they are one of the fastest flying birds in Ireland.

Populations are reported to have significantly declined in the last decade and much of this is attributed to the loss of natural breeding sites. Swifts travel thousands of miles from tropical Africa to return year after year to one nesting site. However the trend to redevelop old buildings and regulations regarding insulating our homes means many of these natural sites are no longer available.

These boxes have been placed as high as possible, close to the eaves of a building to give the bird a clear flight-path - swifts need to be able to free-fall as they leave the nest.

Swifts nest in colonies, so having at least three boxes together is key to attracting them to nest. Fingers crossed we get some new neighbours soon!

Today marks the release of the records by the National Archives of Ireland - a long awaited release for many historians and genealogists.

Looking at the 1926 Census for we see the household return of Major-General Oliver Nugent, well known army officer, known for his command of the 36th (Ulster) Division during the First World War - particularly at the Battle of the Somme.

Just over a month after the Census, on the 31st May 1926, Nugent passed away in his home in Mountnugent after succumbing to pneumonia.

To mark the 100th anniversary of his passing, the museum will hold a conference - Nugent 100 - on Saturday July 4th 2026 - keep an eye on our events page for more information.
