Muhammad Yakin (b. 1992) is an Indonesian artist born in Bukittinggi and now works and resides in Yogyakarta. His practice centers on the “gray area”—a space of ambiguity that opens room for reflection and multiple perspectives. Yakin’s recent works explore humanity’s search for truth through anthropomorphic figures set against dynamic, monochromatic backgrounds. Using meticulous layers of black ink, he builds gradual transitions from darkness to light, echoing the shifting depths of the gray area that underpins his artistic approach.
He was named The Most Promising Artist of the Year at the 2019 UOB Painting of the Year awards and later received the 2024 UOB Painting of the Year award. He recently completed a residency at the Cité internationale des arts in France.
The exhibition becomes a space where Yakin’s framework of thinking takes shape through his experience of witnessing the forms he creates. Each work acts as a visual experiment that situates ideas within the Gray Area, a space that allows ambiguity, shifts in meaning, and growth that never truly complete. Within this context, this Recurrence exhibition presents itself as an open process that reveals how ideas move through time, form, and perception.
