ara contemporary is pleased to share Ipeh Nur’s participation in TOKYO ATLAS International Exhibition, under the artistic direction of Miki Akiko, presenting ‘Soil Time; The Battle of Giant Serpent and White Crocodile’.

Conceived as a landscape of excavation, the work reveals layers of memory and history embedded within the soil, from ancient geological formations and colonial wounds to present-day ecological disasters and speculative futures.

Drawing from her journey along the ancient Muria Strait on Java’s northern coast, Ipeh Nur traces how sedimentation, colonial-era deforestation and continued industrial development have transformed the landscape. Once submerged beneath water, the region now faces recurring floods and rising sea levels, revealing the enduring consequences of human intervention in nature.

At the intersection of land, history and mythology, Ipeh Nur revisits ‘The Legend of the Giant Serpent and the White Crocodile’, reinterpreting it not merely as folklore, but as a cultural marker, a metaphor for disaster mitigation and a symbol of resistance. Through this work, she questions whether mythology might once again serve as a form of protection or resistance, as it did for ancestors seeking to make sense of natural forces.

ara contemporary presents Nguyễn Phương Linh for SPOT at Art Jakarta 2026, featuring ‘Pulse 1’ and ‘Pulse 2’.

Following her recent presentation as part of the Uzbekistan National Pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale, Phương Linh continues her exploration of the relationships between bodies and landscapes, visibility and invisibility, weight and void.

In ‘Pulse 1’ and ‘Pulse 2’, Phương Linh works with a material that has recurred throughout her practice for nearly a decade. Printed on translucent PVC, landscapes gradually relinquish the certainty of place, drifting towards the textures of flesh, bodily fluids, and internal organs. Saturated in red upon red, the installation engulfs the viewer, making the distinction between geography and the body increasingly difficult to discern.

ara contemporary presents Nguyễn Phương Linh for SPOT at Art Jakarta 2026 with ‘Encounters’, following her recent presentation as part of the Uzbekistan National Pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale.

Working with a material that has recurred throughout her practice for nearly a decade, Linh prints landscapes onto translucent PVC, gradually dissolving the certainty of place into textures suggestive of flesh, bodily fluids, and internal organs. Saturated in red upon red, ‘Encounters’ surrounds the viewer in a space where the distinction between geography and the body becomes increasingly difficult to discern.

Through this shifting relationship between landscape and corporeality, the work extends Linh’s wider engagement with fragmented histories, visibility and invisibility, and the ways bodies carry traces of geopolitical and intergenerational memory.

Further installation views of ara contemporary’s presentation at Art Jakarta 2026, featuring works by artists from Indonesia and beyond.

Among the works on view is Marcos Kueh’s ‘Hope and Fear: Jujur Jakarta’ (2025), an expansion of his solo exhibition ‘Smooth Sailing, 一路順風’. Adapted to the urban and socio-political landscape of Indonesia, the work layers traditional Chinese business logos and temple blessings with vintage Indonesian corporate motifs, exploring the intersections of migration, capitalism, faith, and identity.

Its shimmering surface evokes the promise of a “better life”, while its charred edges recall Jakarta’s historical street riots and violence against ethnic minorities. Moving between hope and fear, the work reflects on histories of racialised capitalism while looking towards the possibility of a more understanding future.

We look forward to welcoming you on the final day of Art Jakarta 2026.

ara contemporary is pleased to invite you to a dance performance conceived as part of Arlette Quỳnh-Anh Trần’s solo exhibition, ‘Future Tense’, with composition by Nursalim Yadi Anugerah and choreography by Nguyen Hoang Anh.

‘Future Tense’ begins with futures imagined between the late 1950s and the 1970s, when many young nations were reshaping how they appeared to themselves and to the world. Departing from the theatricality of national pavilions, it loosens gestures of welcome, service and presentation from their historical functions, abstracting them to drift through bodies, sound, light and moving shadows. Tensed between admiration and mourning, it probes how a future might survive within the body, even after the world that summoned it has disappeared.

Please join us on Sunday, 4 October 2026 at 4 PM at ara contemporary.

ara contemporary is pleased to share installation views of ‘Witness’, the debut solo exhibition by Miranda Mazuki, currently on view in the Focus Gallery.

Across the exhibition, figures and landscapes are subdued into abstraction, functioning less as representations than as metaphoric constructions of displacement and dissolution. This elusiveness reflects Mazuki’s experience of living between places and cultures, where her sense of origin and belonging remains unsettled.

The works evoke the nature of memories: altered by time, subject to erosion, and resistant to precise description.
