Coronation Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako. On May 1, 2019, Naruhito ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne, the 126th Emperor of Japan. According to the ancient tradition of Sokui no Rei, the new sovereign, after unveiling himself, proclaimed his enthronement from the Takamikura, the elaborate wooden and gilded structure that represents the supreme imperial seat, wearing the Kanmuri on his head. The coronation took place before dignitaries at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The prime minister, in his congratulations, uttered the most famous exclamation in the Japanese language: Banzai! Which means "Long live the emperor."

The Gold State Coach was commissioned late in 1760 by George III’s Master of the Horse for the king’s coronation and wedding to Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in 1761. However, the complexity of the project meant that it was first used for the State Opening of Parliament on 25 November 1762.

The coach has been used at every Coronation from George IV onwards, including Queen Elizabeth II’s in 1953.

The coach is on display in the Royal Mews, Buckingham Palace, open until the end of November this year.
