Art is useful not because it serves a practical function. Nor is it useful because it reveals the inner workings of the universe (like science does). It is useful because it gives us a way to question those things, a way that doesn’t revolve around rules, set methods, or even results. With every new step in his artistic journey, an artist learns how to ask better questions, and how to make those questions resonate with the viewer. “Nice!” departs from this desire to perfect the art of questioning, and to arrive at what Immanuel Kant calls “the first moment” of aesthetic judgment, where the viewer no longer evaluates an art object pragmatically, but aesthetically, and thereby resuming the line of inquiry opened by the artist—where “nice” is no longer simply an expression of approval, but also an acknowledgment of a creative work well done.
