Nagycenk Observatory

Nagycenk Observatory Everyday life of the Széchenyi István Geophysical Observatory of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (commonly known as Nagycenk Observatory).

The Széchenyi István Geophysical Observatory (IAGA code: NCK) has been established in 1957 within the International Geophysical Year. The original objective of the observatory was to record continuously the Earth's electromagnetic field of external origin but nowadays data acquisition systems of earth current, atmospheric electricity and ionospheric observations are also operating.

Starting from today, you can always check out our most recent ionogram at http://aero.nck.ggki.hu/data/iono/recent.png. The png file is updated every 15 minutes. Feedbacks are always welcome. Also, let us know if you find anything interesting on a particular iononogram!

In order to ensure data quality it is essential to keep the level of electromagnetic disturbances originated from unnatural source as low as possible. Yesterday we made some investigation within the territory of the observatory to identify possible sources of such disturbances and at the same time, to find the the most undisturbed areas for our magnetic coils.

Atmospheric electricity is continuously monitored here at Nagycenk Observatory using the so-called potential gradient (PG) measurement. The device we use for the registration is constructed entirely by us. Navigate to http://aero.nck.ggki.hu, give our web application a few seconds to establish connection to the data stream, have a look at the plot area and follow the recording online!

Last week we had visitors from the AGH University of Science and Technology, the Uniwersytet Jagielloński and the Instytut Fizyki Jądrowej im. Henryka Niewodniczańskiego PAN in Krakow, Poland. You can take a look at our guests and their hosts from MTA CSFK GGI as they are standing in front of our Schumann resonance ball antenna.

This is what you can see from the top of the transmitting antenna of our vertical ionosonde constructed by the Centrum Badań Kosmicznych PAN. Nice view, isn't it? As a bonus we attached an ionogram recorded by our system very recently.

Although single-board computers appeared already in the late 70's, it's only the recent years that make them widely acknowledged thanks to the appearance of cheap and popular models with large community support such as the Raspberry Pi. Here at Nagycenk Observatory we also try to make use of the opportunities provided by these tiny yet powerful piece of hardware. Our colleague's blog post explains how: http://geodata.ggki.hu/kockulok/monitoring-the-weather-with-a-ws2350-and-a-raspberry-pi.html
