The European Roma Cultural Foundation (ERCF) is an independent non-profit foundation registered on the 2nd of August, 2010, in Budapest, Hungary. ERCF, the operational and fundraising body, exists to strengthen and widely promote the role of Roma arts and culture in the enlarging Europe (and beyond) as a way to fight against negative stereotypes and hostile attitudes towards Roma communities. For a future world of artistic and cultural diversity where Roma arts, culture, history and language are equally valued and respected, and the power of artistic creation and education, especially that of young people, is essential for changing negative stereotypes towards people of Roma origin in the enlarging Europe and beyond. Gallery8 is strategically located at Mátyás tér, the center of Budapest's 8th district, the area of the city, which is mostly populated by Roma inhabitants. Gallery8 aims to serve the Roma community: it aims to enable and support the production, presentation and interpretation of Roma artworks. It is envisioned as an intercultural space, where the experimentation, creation, collaboration, and discussion between Roma and non-Roma could take place and result in new works and solutions for a future in peaceful coexistence. Gallery8 wishes to put emphasis on investing in the capacities of young Roma artists, presenters, managers and entrepreneurs to help them to succeed, to learn, to be accepted positively by broad audiences, to become more knowledgeable and actively engaged in networking and collaboration in Europe and beyond. Gallery 8 aims to motivate the development of innovative projects and experimental cross-disciplinary work of young Roma. It shall be the space of new ideas, discourses, and trends in Roma contemporary art. MAGYAR NYELVŰ LEÍRÁS

A Gallery8 – Roma Kortárs Művészeti Teret az Európai Roma Kulturális Alapítvány (ERCF) hozta létre. (http://www.romacult.org)

What happens to the history of contemporary art when Roma art is written back into it?

EPICENTRE: Roma History of Contemporaneity in Central Europe traces three decades of artistic production across Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

We follow the works, artists, exhibitions, institutions and ideas through which Roma artistic production in Central Europe entered contemporary art and became part of what we understand as contemporaneity.

This history exists. It has simply never been brought together in this form.

Over the coming months, four institutions will research it, exhibit it, debate it, teach it and place it into circulation.

Follow EPICENTRE as the history unfolds.

AKE DIKHEA? 2026 — AUDIENCE AWARD

Caliu: Nothing Else, What Else Can I Do?, directed by Simona Constantin, has received the Audience Award at the 10th edition of AKE DIKHEA?, the International Festival of Romani Film in Berlin.

The documentary follows legendary violinist Gheorghe “Caliu” Anghel, who refuses to accept that his days as the “King of the Violin” are behind him.

Moving between present-day struggles, memories of past success, concerts and everyday life in the Roma village where he was born, the film portrays an artist trying to reinvent himself while music remains a constant throughout his journey.

The film also received a Special Jury Mention at this year's festival.

Congratulations to Simona Constantin and the entire team of Caliu: Nothing Else, What Else Can I Do?

ERCF delegates Timea Junghaus as a jury member to the beautiful community of AKE DIKHEA AkeDikhea, the iconic Roma Film Festival celebrating its 10th anniversary ❤️ This year, AKE DIKHEA? turns the lens back on the myth itself. Under the motto “Breaking the Spell”, the festival poses the question: who benefits when a people is treated as mysterious rather than human? What happens when Romani filmmakers take a stereotype that was built to exoticise and frighten, and reclaim it, meaning to bend it, mock it, dismantle it, or fill it with real memory instead of projection?
Superstition works by keeping its subject unknowable. It thrives on distance. Film does the opposite: it brings the audience close, into a home, a family, into a lived life, where no myth survives contact with the particular. That is the quiet power our program holds this year: stories that refuse to be symbols, told by the people the symbols were made about.
Our films this year move in both directions. Some confront the old stereotype head-on, taking a myth built to frighten and turning it back on those who invented it. Others go inward, toward the rituals, warnings, and quiet magic that Romani families still live by — not as something to be embarrassed of or explained away, but as a form of knowledge with its own logic, its own care, its own truth.
Breaking the Spell, in this sense, is not the opposite of dreaming. It may be one of its oldest forms.
As always, we remain committed to intersectionality: superstition does not fall on all Romani people equally. Our selection continues to make room for Romani women’s perspectives, for LGBTQI+ voices, and for stories that refuse any single, flattened idea of who Roma and Sinti are.
To believe with courage is also to refuse the myths that were dreamed up about us by others. This year, AKE DIKHEA? invites you to watch closely — and to question the superstition at the door.

The European Roma Cultural Foundation mourns the passing of Tony Gatlif Tony Gatlif, one of the most consequential filmmakers in Roma cultural history.

Through films including Latcho Drom, Gadjo Dilo, Les Princes, Vengo and Exils, Gatlif transformed the cinematic representation of Roma lives, histories and cultures. At a time when Roma were overwhelmingly seen through images produced by others, his cinema created a radically different visual language , one shaped by Roma presence, music, movement, humour, desire, displacement and resistance.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, collaborators, and to the many communities across the world for whom his work has carried such profound meaning.

We have lost an extraordinary filmmaker and an irreplaceable voice.

Latcho drom, Tony Gatlif. ❤️
