🚨 Emperor Penguin listed as ‘Endangered’ by the IUCN 🐧

Due to the impacts of climate change, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) officially listed the emperor penguin as ‘Endangered’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ in April this year.

Climate change in Antarctica is resulting in the premature break-up and subsequent loss of sea ice 🧊 Emperor penguins rely on sea ice that is securely anchored to the coastline, ocean floor, or grounded icebergs as essential habitat for their chicks and during their moulting season, when they are not waterproof. If the ice breaks apart too early, the consequences can be fatal. Studies related to this phenomenon project that the population of emperor penguins may decrease by as much as fifty percent by the 2080s 🐧

The classification of the emperor penguin as an endangered species serves as a significant and urgent indicator that climate change is exacerbating the biodiversity extinction crisis. It is imperative that we continue to enhance climate education and reinforce climate action initiatives 💪🏻

The MoCC is committed to raising public awareness of climate change and inspiring changes in attitudes and behaviour. We invite you to support the Museum’s operations and development with a donation, empowering more people to take climate action and do their part for our planet 💚🌍

🎁 As a token of our gratitude, for any donation of HK$100 or above, you will receive a beautifully designed glasses cleaning cloth featuring the artwork ‘Cities and Nature – Hong Kong’ by the artist, Bernard Chang (available while stocks last).

⛩️ Hong Kong ICH Month 2026|🌍 Climate Action

Climate action is not only about science and technology, it is also deeply intertwined with Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) 🌾 Generations of farming knowledge, craftsmanship, and eco-friendly community practices have long guided humanity to live in harmony with nature. This ancestral wisdom offers crucial insights for modern climate change adaptation and building community resilience 🌱

To encourage the public to explore these wisdoms from a fresh perspective, ‘Hong Kong ICH Month 2026’, presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and organized by the Intangible Cultural Heritage Office (ICHO), will be held from 30 May to 30 June. Under the theme ‘ICH Around Town’, the event features a series of diverse programmes designed to give the public and tourists a deeper understanding of ICH. The MoCC is pleased to continue its collaboration with the ICHO as one of the partners in this meaningful event, putting into practice the concept of ‘shaping tourism with cultural activities and promoting culture through tourism’ 🏛️✨
