M+ and CHANEL are taking the partnership further in its continuing support for M+’s moving image programmes, as CHANEL becomes a Lead Partner of the museum and launches Pioneering Visions, a new initiative celebrating visionary artists.

The first highlight is ‘Sarah Sze: Centrifuge’, a solo presentation opening in February 2027. Through public talks, screenings, workshops, and a new digital hub showcasing the M+ Collections, Pioneering Visions will spotlight artists and makers shaping contemporary visual culture, with a focus on visionary voices from Hong Kong, Greater China, Asia, and beyond.

‘Myths and Monsters: The Art of Fantasy in Asia’ opens today at the West Gallery, L2!

From Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints and Chinese shadow puppetry to Surrealist painting and the post-war emergence of manga and anime, the exhibition traces fantastical storytelling across Asian art, design, moving image, and digital culture, and its global impact. Through imaginative stories, characters, and worlds, these artists confront real-life challenges, reveal deeply human hopes and fears, and invite us to see our world anew.

Step into a fantastical world at M+. ‘Myth and Monsters: The Art of Fantasy in Asia’ opens at M+ next week!

This world-first exhibition traces the evolution of fantasy in Asian visual culture and its global impacts from the nineteenth century to today. Unfolding across four immersive chapters, the exhibition begins with pre-modern traditions and folklore, moves through Surrealism’s spread across Asia and the post-war rise of manga and anime, and continues into the present day, highlighting the influence of myths and monsters across disciplines and regions in the 21st century.

許鞍華執導的《胡越的故事》（1981）於上映四十年後，在CHANEL支持的「M+修復」計劃下，順利完成4K修復。早前電影更在第83屆威尼斯國際電影節中的「Venice Classics」舉行世界首映。

電影刻畫了在港越南難民的困境，並以驚險奇情的格局出之。故事講述曾當兵的越南難民胡越（周潤發飾），與一名同為難民的女子在港相戀。二人偷渡到美國，卻輾轉流落菲律賓唐人街，並受當地黑幫要脅。這部電影確立了許鞍華其後作品的主題──流離與飄泊，同時亦突破了殺手電影的框架，傳遞出深刻的社會訊息。

M+流動影像策展人江千慧表示：「在2026年放映這部電影，我們深深感受到許鞍華導演的作品依然發人深省、打動人心。」她續說：「她對邊緣與被壓抑身分的探索，在這個動盪時代更容易引起共嗚。」

Four decades after its release, Ann Hui’s ‘The Story of Woo Viet’ (1981), restored in 4K under the M+ Restored initiative supported by CHANEL, premiered at the Venice Classics section of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival.

Depicting the plight of Vietnamese refugees in the form of an action thriller, the film follows Woo Viet (Chow Yun-fat), a Vietnamese veteran, who develops a relationship with a fellow refugee in Hong Kong. Their attempt to flee to the United States leaves them stranded in Manila, where they encounter local triads. The film foreshadows the themes of displacement and wandering that preoccupy Hui’s later works and infuses the assassin genre with a serious social message.

‘Presenting this film in 2026, we are struck by how Ann Hui’s films continue to be transformative’, says Chanel Kong, Curator of Moving Image, M+. ‘Her explorations of marginal and withheld identities are more universal than ever in these complicated times in which we live.’
