🌍International Residency Programme: an update from Liao Jiaming (Jiaming Liao) on his first month in Lisbon!

Our 2026 International Residency in Lisbon, in partnership with HANGAR (Hangar), is officially halfway through! Part of Para Site’s 30th anniversary programmes, this initiative connects Hong Kong-based early-career artists with the global contemporary art landscape creating opportunities for cultural exchange, innovation, and dialogue, in line with Triangle Network (Triangle Network)’s global reach.

Liao Jiaming, our artist for the inaugural residency, is spending two months in Portugal. His research explores the entanglement of technology, ideology, and embodied subjectivity within diasporic and networked contexts.

Immersing himself in Lisbon’s art scene, he has been visiting art spaces and studios, and connecting with international residents. 💬Let’s hear from Jiaming:

“Lisbon welcomes me with more than its great pastry and iconic Portuguese egg tart. HANGAR, located in the historical and hilly area of Graça, has been home for two months. I love strolling around the neighbourhood. The hilly winding roads and the clothes hung between buildings gave me nostalgia for Hong Kong since day one.

The first month has been filled with encounters and visits. Together with fellow artists from Colombia, Mexico, Lebanon, and Germany, we have been visiting galleries, artist studios, and independent spaces across the city, gaining a deeper understanding of the local art scene, while also exploring what lies beneath the city’s beautiful yet sometimes worn-out facet.

Portugal was once a vast empire with colonies across the globe, and it remains more than a small European country with its historical traces. We all come with our own focus and projects. The exchanges between the residency artists brighten my daily life as the Mediterranean sunshine.”

📢 Para Site is on the move!

As we mark 30 years, we’re leaving Quarry Bay and preparing for a new home in Hong Kong. From now and throughout 2027, our nomadic programme will unfold across the city, opening up collaborations and new ways to gather around art, culture, and creativity.

Artists and audiences will help shape what comes next. Through these encounters, we’re experimenting and exploring what an institution can make possible. ‘Elsewhere in Me’, which has featured River Lin’s ‘My Body is a Para Site’ and Tong Wenmin’s ‘Towards Solace’, continues with newly commissioned works by Justin Talplacido Shoulder (Phasmahammer) in November and Yim Sui Fong in December. Stay tuned!

From Kennedy Town to Sheung Wan to Quarry Bay, Para Site’s journey has unfolded across many homes in Hong Kong, responding to the needs of the moment. Our next chapter grows from three decades of experimentation and the communities who make Para Site’s work possible.

We’re connecting to the roots of our name—beside or beyond a ‘site’—and we can’t wait to share our 2027 programme later this year!

藝術家與公眾將共同塑造我們未來的方向——透過這些相遇，我們正不斷實驗並探索機構所能成就的各種可能。《此身彼岸》先後呈獻林人中《我的身體是一個藝術空間》及童文敏《何以慰藉》，接續將分別於11月和12月帶來 Justin Talplacido Shoulder（Phasmahammer）及嚴瑞芳的作品——密切關注！

Across 7 intensive days the cohort explored the intersections of contemporary art and technology through workshops, site visits, lectures, and discussions.

From worlding practices and internet narratives to community building and equitable access to technology, we investigated the ways in which artists and communities can shape alternate meanings, forms of exchange, and networks of support.

As they conclude their residencies in London and Hong Kong respectively, we invite you to this special evening with the artists exploring the works and ideas developed during the two-month exchange.

🐘‘Recently my research has focused on animal imperialism and architecture of violence. I spent a lot of time in the museums, zoos, and prison museums.’ — Vvzela Kook

🌿‘Thinking through some of the extractive methodologies of this time as well as how this follows the same trajectory out of the movements and displacement of people throughout the empire.’ — Shiraz Bayjoo

Drawing on their existing works and materials gathered during their residencies, Kook and Bayjoo will engage in a dialogue about how their ecological research into colonial circulation intersects across multiple geographies, and how these connect to their own family and cultural experiences.

As an extension of the performance ‘Towards Solace’, this movement workshop invites you to join artist Tong Wenmin in exploring bodily awareness – examining the connection between an individual’s spirit, emotions, and movements.

Focusing on simple gestures, the workshop uses a series of physical exercises that guide participants to discover patterns within ordinary movement and transform them into ritual-like expressions with particular aesthetic qualities. Through this workshop, you can deepen awareness of your own physical and bodily experience.

Open to all — no prior experience required.

作為行為展演《何以慰藉》的延伸活動，這場形體工作坊將由藝術家童文敏帶領參加者，從身體感知出發，探索個體精神、情感與行為動作之間的連結。

是次工作坊聚焦於日常行為的動作，透過身體練習引導參加者發掘動作中的規律性，並演變為帶有儀式感和審美、有別於日常行為的表達。參加者將深化對自我形體動作的認識，體驗身體狀態的變化。

Inspired by the grinding density of metropolitan life and the drifting states of inner unrest in modern living, Tong perceives the body as a medium for channeling the planetary existence into inner realms, carving out a time and place that runs parallel to the city. Within a hybrid landscape of mist, plants, and scaffolding, the performers hum in solitude, attuning our senses to return to our deeper selves.

Join and be a companion on the journey of seeking Solace.

We are seeking an Operations Coordinator!

The Operations Coordinator supports Para Site’s day-to-day fundraising administration, donor and patron relations, events, and organisational operations. The role provides accurate and responsive administrative support across individual giving, grants, corporate sponsorship, patron programmes and major fundraising events. It also contributes to the effective running of Para Site’s office, public-facing activities, and internal administrative systems.

This is a hands-on role requiring strong organisation, and the ability to coordinate multiple tasks and deadlines as part of a collaborative team structure.

🚀KICKING OFF: Harbour Exchange Fellowship Programme

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that our new reciprocal residency is officially underway!

This collaboration between Cheng‑Lan Foundation (Cheng-Lan Foundation 承蘭藝術文化機構), Delfina Foundation (Delfina Foundation), and Para Site marks a milestone as part of our ‘Para Site: 30 Years’ anniversary programmes. It connects artists from the UK and Hong Kong through a two-month exchange, fostering critical dialogues and new opportunities for future shared projects across the two art communities.

We are proud to introduce the two incredible artists leading this exchange:

Currently in Hong Kong🇭🇰, Shiraz Bayjoo () works across film, painting, photography, and installation to explore cultural memory and postcolonial nationhood. His research interrogates memorialisation: what the city chooses to preserve, how it builds new monuments today, and what is allowed to drift or remain unresolved.

Now in London 🇬🇧, Vvzela Kook (❀Vvzela KOOK) works across moving images, drawing, performance, and theatre. Her transmedia practice investigates the transoceanic movement of ‘exotic animals’ during European expansion, and how the display of these animals in royal menagerie was intertwined with the emergence of panopticon and architecture of violence.

本計劃由承蘭藝術文化機構、Delfina基金會與Para Site聯合主辦，也是「Para Site：三十年」慶祝項目之一。計劃連結英國與香港的藝術家，以為期兩個月的交流促進深度對話，並為兩地藝術社群未來的合作項目開拓更多契機。

我們欣然介紹兩位出色的藝術家：

現駐香港🇭🇰，Shiraz Bayjoo的創作涵蓋電影、繪畫、攝影與裝置，探討文化記憶與後殖民國族認同。他的研究聚焦於紀念：城市選擇保存甚麼、如何在當下建成新的紀念物，以及甚麼是可以游移、不被定論的。

現駐倫敦🇬🇧，曲淵澈的創作跨越流動影像、繪畫、行為與劇場。她的跨媒體實踐探討歐洲擴張時期「珍奇動物」的越洋流動、這些動物在皇家動物園中的展示，以及與全景監控和暴力建築的交錯關係。
