【Sun Artroom | Black & White Hand-Drawn Map Demonstration】

In conjunction with the “The 2nd Hong Kong Paintings in Sai Yuen Lane” exhibition, Sun Museum will host a hand-drawn map demonstration on Saturday, 11 July, from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. We have invited the featured artist Angryangry (Leung Ka Chun) from the first phase exhibition to live demonstrate how he uses technical pens and water-soluble coloured pencils to sketch a hand-drawn map themed around the intersection of Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun.

The neighbourhoods of Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun are among the most vibrant and lively corners of Hong Kong. The iconic “Ding Ding” trams and street cats leisurely pass by, and the streets are lined with the signboards of historic shops. Near the waterfront pier, old-world charm seamlessly intertwines with modern cafes, art galleries, and murals, creating a perfect blend of nostalgia and hipster culture. With meticulous black-and-white lines complemented by a light watercolour wash, Angryangry will vividly bring these story-filled streets and characters to life. This event will be conducted in Cantonese, with free admission. Interested individuals please register online through link in bio or call 2116 3496 to reserve your seat.

We warmly welcome everyone to come and witness the creative process firsthand and see up close how the artist transforms everyday urban scenery into a warm, soulful artistic map!

【Sun Playroom | Ink and Brush: Black & White Hand-Drawn Map Course】

In conjunction with the “The 2nd Hong Kong Paintings in Sai Yuen Lane” exhibition, Sun Museum will host an Ink and Brush: Black and White Hand-Drawn Map Course this July. We have specially invited featured artist Angryangry (Leung Ka Chun) from the first phase exhibition to personally guide the sessions. Spanning three sessions, this course is designed to introduce participants to the basic concepts of map projection and the brief history of cartography. Participants will be encouraged to hand-draw a map of their own neighbourhood, allowing them to rediscover and creatively express their surrounding environment through art🗺️✒️

This course is suitable for all ages, and no prior drawing experience is required.

🔗Registration link: https://www.en.sunmuseum.org.hk/sun-playroom

Ink and Brush: Black & White Hand-Drawn Map Course
Dates: July 15, 22, 29 (Wednesday)
Time: 10:30 AM – 12:00 NN
Venue: Sun Museum Café (G/F, Artisan House, 1 Sai Yuen Lane, Sai Ying Pun)
Fee: HKD 980 for 3 sessions (materials and tools included)
Language: Cantonese

Materials:
Cardboard boxes, string, adhesive tape, three-coluor coloured pencils, water brush pens, technical pens, Canson watercoluor paper, plain white paper.

✐ Lesson 1 | The History of Pictorial Maps & Projection Concepts

This session introduces the historical development of hand-drawn maps (Pictorial Maps), tracing their evolution from early functional “treasure cartography” to modern artistic forms used for decoration and infographics. Participants will understand the basic principles of map projection and learn how to use pen and paper to record their own location and surroundings, establishing a foundational understanding of “how to represent space on a flat surface”.

✐ Lesson 2: Miniature Neighbourhood Modelling & Bird’s-Eye View Observation

Participants will use cardboard boxes and stickers to construct simple house models, assembling them into a miniature neighbourhood. Observing the model from a bird’s-eye view, participants will practice drawing using two colours: one to sketch the perspective grid, and the other to trace contour lines and outlines. This hands-on exercise guides participants through the process of transforming a 3D model into a 2D map.

✐ Lesson 3: Map Decoration & Basic Drawing Techniques

Participants will learn fundamental drawing techniques, including hatching, cross-hatching, and watercolour wash techniques. Using tools such as technical pens and coloured pencils, you will colour and decorate your map. The goal is to balance practicality (navigation functionality) with aesthetics, creating a personalized neighbourhood map that is both usable and artistically valuable.
