After Midnight - Cyril Delettre

Cyril Delettre participates to the development of conceptual photography by pursuing the works of Stephen Shore and Lewis Baltz. Delettre's photo series documents the side effects of modern civilization, focusing on places that lie outside the bounds of canonical reception: urban wastelands, abandoned industrial sites and warehouses. His photographs reveal the correspondences between spatial forms in the everyday world and advanced artistic forms.

In his work, Delettre extends the notion of documentary photography with a minimalist aesthetic. His minimalist and reduced image compositions explore the photographic process and refer not only to the work of photographers such as Lee Friedlander and Lewis Baltz.

Convergences can be found in his formal and aesthetic compositional patterns as well as in the contact he focuses on, which Delettre subjects to a highly critical analysis without however losing sight of essentials. Delettre chooses to work after midnight when the city is abandoned and the electric lights redesign the perspective and new forms appear.

Stage of Mind by JeeYoung LEE

Stage of Mind began in 2007 with self-reflection—asking, “where am I in my mind?” Through life events, Korean artist JeeYoung Lee continually questions identity and contemplates existence. This core drives all the photographs, which use symbolic objects to create a “psychological landscape,” a metaphoric reconstruction of perception and a relationship to reality. While working, every element in the scene is hand-crafted to materialize the emotional experience, culminating in a centerpiece that personifies the artist in the form of a model, completing a theatrical description of the life story recorded in photography. Each stage takes about two to three months to complete (sometimes longer), with test shots taken once the set is ready, and the final images captured on a 4x5 large format film camera. After the scene is captured, it is completely demolished and the studio becomes empty again. Destroying what was created allows the artist to transcend emotions and analyze and observe themself from creation to destruction.
JeeYoung Lee is constantly pushing to grow, and as life changes, so does the stage that is created—so the possibilities of Stage of Mind are infinite.

As the summer ends, we would like to share with you a captivating photo series - Conte d’été (Summer Tale) by Catherine Henriette.

For around thirty years, Catherine Henriette has been observing China, with its economic, cultural and social evolution—years in which the pulse of the country has been rising, things have been moving fast and probably too fast.

As a firsthand witness to this frenzy, Catherine Henriette paused time with her Leica camera and rolls of film. With modern China as her backdrop, she captured vanishing points and figures, photographed like a shifting mirage.

Catherine Henriette revisited the beaches of northern China to photograph the Conte d’été (Summer tale) series—where she had escaped to on scorching hot days as a student in Beijing.

With her keen observation of the pleasant beach bathers and the seaside once she was familiar with, she captured the seemingly eternally good-nature of the atmosphere—as if time has been frozen in a wonderful long vacation.

Her revisit to the coast has given her a delicate and sharp insight into the dramatic changes of the cities—and the merrily damages that modernity has brought.

Zeng Nian 曾年 photographed the construction of the Three Gorges Dam for 14 years. The resulting 'Three Gorges' series brought him international recognition as a witness to China's dramatic modernization.

The Three Gorges Dam is the world's largest hydraulic dam in Hubei, China. Built to control flooding in the Yangtze River, it has also displaced over a million people and flooded archaeological and cultural sites. Zeng Nian captured the moment before they disappeared.

The choice of a wide-angle, panoramic 6:17 format projects a sense of melancholic nostalgia. His investigation of the social and cultural realities of China in the throes of rapid development fills his photographs with humanity, reality and simplicity. His work acts as a window into the old China. In Zeng Nian’s work, the Three Gorges becomes the symbol of the confrontation between secular history and the modern world.

His photographs have been exhibited in various museums, including the Musée Cernuschi in Paris. His work is also part of the M+ Museum's collection here in Hong Kong.
