Hi all, we are a team from HKU working on a research initiative for documenting the cultural landscape of Yam O.🌊

Yam O, now know

n as Sunny Bay, used to be a log pond— a bay for storing timber. The history of the log pond industry in Yam O Bay dates back to the 1950s-2000s, playing a significant role in Hong Kong’s post-war industrial development and in the cultural history of Lantau Island. As the era of log ponds came to a close, the wooden piles fixed in Yam O Bay have slowly submerged into the seabed, vanishing over time. Have you ever noticed these remaining wooden piles on the surface of Yam O Bay while traveling on the Airport Express? Existing records related to the Yam O Bay log pond are quite scattered and fragmented. Our goal is to piece together the history of the log pond industry in Yam O Bay, document the details of this local industry, and share the stories of Yam O Bay with you. 🌊Follow us for more!
