HKPM Student Ambassadors explore the world of conservation

The safe display of objects relies on the expertise and dedication of conservators working behind the scenes.

Recently, participants in the Hong Kong Palace Museum Student Ambassador Programme took part in two conservation-focused learning activities. They were given a rare opportunity to visit the Museum's Conservation Studio, which is normally closed to the public, and heard from Mr Chan Shing-wai, former Assistant Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Heritage and Museums) and former Chief Curator (Conservation), who shared real-life conservation case studies and insights into the work involved in preserving cultural heritage.

🔍 Students explored techniques including condition check, painting framing, and 3D scanning. Through hands-on activities and observations under the microscope, they experienced the precision, scientific judgement and attention to details required in conservation work.

✨ From conservation stories to hands-on learning activities, the programme offered students a deeper appreciation of the care and expertise that allow cultural objects to be safely shared with the public.

💫 And their behind-the-scenes journey at the Museum does not end here. Stay tuned for highlights from the Student Cultural Ambassadors' internship experiences.

Interested in becoming a Hong Kong Palace Museum Student Ambassador and enjoying unique behind-the-scenes museum experiences? Stay tuned to our social media channels for the latest updates.

The Hong Kong Palace Museum Student Ambassador Programme, supported by the China Merchants Foundation as Lead Sponsor, is designed for tertiary and secondary students, with the goal to cultivate the students’ interest in and knowledge of Chinese art and culture through a series of learning workshops and practical sessions. The Programme will not only enhance students’ understanding of cultural objects and museum work, but also nurture future arts and cultural talents and museum professionals in Hong Kong.

HKPM Treasure ✦

As White Dew arrives, the air begins to turn crisp with autumn, just the right time to plan an outdoor adventure. In the Qing court, “outdoor activities” took on a far grander scale: the Mulan autumn hunt.

“Mulan” is a Manchu term meaning “deer calling.” Every autumn, Qing emperors led their entourage to the Imperial Hunting Grounds in Mulan for royal hunting, mounted archery, and military training. The autumn hunt was not only a royal hunting event, but also an important occasion to review and strengthen martial readiness.

Painted by Giuseppe Castiglione and others, The Qianlong Emperor Suding a Bear captures one such moment from the emperor’s hunting tour. This hanging scroll portrays the 32-year-old Qianlong Emperor (r. 1736–1795) riding alone in the woods. He holds a bow and arrow, concentrating as he prepares to shoot a black bear hiding behind a tree. The bear’s fearful expression further highlights the emperor’s calm and heroic presence. The emperor and his mount are rendered with remarkable precision and a strong sense of volume. The figures were evidently painted by Giuseppe Castiglione, and the landscape setting was added by Chinese court painters, making this work a masterful fusion of Chinese and European artistic styles.

What makes this painting even more special is that it was painted to commemorate Qianlong’s first autumn hunts in Mulan after ascending the throne. It is one of ten scrolls from the set Imperial Hunting Scenes of the Qianlong Emperor.

This autumn, visit the Hong Kong Palace Museum and witness, through this painting, just how grand a royal “outdoor activity” could be nearly 300 years ago.

As the heat of summer begins to fade and a hint of coolness fills the air, we turn to Su Shi’s idea of an early autumn evening well spent: gathering with friends, boating at Red Cliff, admiring the moon, and sharing wine. His line, “A cool breeze came gently along, but it raised no waves in the water,” would become part of the enduring legacy of his masterpiece, Former Ode to the Red Cliff.

The internationally renowned connoisseur and calligrapher Wong Kwan Shut had a special affinity for writing Su Shi’s poetry and prose. This handscroll, Su Shi’s “Former Ode to the Red Cliff” in Cursive Script, represents a highlight of his later years. At the phrase “We would throw an arm around those immortal beings in their flight and go off to roam with them,” Wong’s brushwork turns spirited and unrestrained; at “we would embrace the bright moonlight and have it done with forever,” it becomes solemn and weighty. The phrase “the cool breeze on the river” is rendered almost entirely in distinct dots, creating a rhythmic echo across the paper, while “with the bright moon among the mountains” unfolds in a continuous chain of movement. As the brush and ink respond to the changing mood of the text, it feels as if a cool breeze is rising softly from the paper.

This early autumn, visit the Hong Kong Palace Museum and follow Wong Kwan Shut’s brush and ink on a refreshing moonlit journey.

The same source of water, yet three cities reveal three different cultural landscapes.

Same element, different city energy! In July, 22 young participants embarked on an exploration of Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Beijing, discovering that each city has its own rhythm, personality and cultural DNA.

As part of the Hong Kong Palace Museum's flagship youth learning and exchange programme, the 5th edition of " Bi-city Youth Cultural Leadership Programme" took them to:

📍Hong Kong | WestK, Taikoo Place
📍 Guangzhou | Guangzhou Museum of Art, Taikoo Li Julong Wan, Taikoo Hui
📍 Beijing | 798 Art District, Taikoo Li Sanlitun, INDIGO

Through site visits, community exploration and exchanges, they gradually discovered that culture is not something static, but an ever-evolving creative process shaped by people.

Their next stop? An “Ideas Market” designed and brought to life by the participants themselves!

✨Ideas Market
📅 25 August (16:30-18:00)
26 August (10:00-14:00 & 16:00-18:00)
📍 HKJC Auditorium Foyer, Hong Kong Palace Museum

The organiser reserves the right to modify or cancel the event based on actual circumstances without prior notice.

Through display panels, physical elements and digital prototypes, the participants will present their cultural innovation concepts, offering a comprehensive showcase of the students’ journey from initial observation to final creation.

Join us in celebrating how these young cultural talents are turning inspiration into action and creativity into future possibilities. 💡

Organised by the Hong Kong Palace Museum, its flagship Bi-city Youth Cultural Leadership Programme aims to encourage cultural exchange between young people. The programme is supported by the Palace Museum and the Office of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People’s Republic of China in Beijing, and Swire Properties as Lead Sponsor.
