HKPM Student Ambassadors explore the world of conservation

The safe display of objects relies on the expertise and dedication of conservators working behind the scenes.
Recently, participants in the Hong Kong Palace Museum Student Ambassador Programme took part in two conservation-focused learning activities. They were given a rare opportunity to visit the Museum's Conservation Studio, which is normally closed to the public, and heard from Mr Chan Shing-wai, former Assistant Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Heritage and Museums) and former Chief Curator (Conservation), who shared real-life conservation case studies and insights into the work involved in preserving cultural heritage.
🔍 Students explored techniques including condition check, painting framing, and 3D scanning. Through hands-on activities and observations under the microscope, they experienced the precision, scientific judgement and attention to details required in conservation work.
✨ From conservation stories to hands-on learning activities, the programme offered students a deeper appreciation of the care and expertise that allow cultural objects to be safely shared with the public.
💫 And their behind-the-scenes journey at the Museum does not end here. Stay tuned for highlights from the Student Cultural Ambassadors' internship experiences.
