Bringing together eight artists whose practices explore movement, transformation, and the inevitable shifts between physical and digital life, ‘Malleable Archives: What the Future Remembers’ is a multimedia exhibition invites us to remain curious, united, and responsive during a period shaped by rapid change, ecological uncertainty, disconnection, and constant surveillance.

Featuring Leah Ying Lin, Michela Roman, Cian Duggan, Clayton Calvert, Taezoo Park, Mr.Bambii, Hà Ninh Phạm, and Refik Anadol.

Dear God, a new installation by Kyle b. co., opens in our NYC basement on September 5th (6–8pm), running through September 20th.

Over the course of the show, a poem will slowly build across the walls and floor, stanzas overlapping and dissolving beneath new lines. The floor will be gilded in thin paper, kept in constant repair. Drum machines, guest musicians and DJs will keep the room in ongoing sound.

The space will also hold ceramic works from the series From What (I) Remember(s), plates laser-engraved with language and partly lost beneath glaze.

Centered on the refrain “Dear God,” the work treats prayer as an open address, repeated without an answer.

Anna Ridler: Centre Pompidou Acquisition

Nguyen Wahed is delighted to announce that the Centre Pompidou in Paris has acquired ‘Chelsea Bridge’ (2025) by Anna Ridler, a generative work made using a custom model, custom software and a physical almanac.

‘Chelsea Bridge’ is part of ‘The Shell Record: Breathings of the Moon’, a series of AI-generated shells, trained on a dataset of photographs taken over many years along the Thames.

The series of work was conceived as part of [aside], a series of exhibitions presented in partnership with Distributed Gallery who created a bespoke protocol allowing artists to use the smart contract as a medium with custom time-lock features.

The work was presented in London as part of Nguyen Wahed’s group exhibition, ‘Face Value’ (pictured), and last year it was included in ZKM’s exhibition ‘The Story That Has Just Begun. NFTs from the ZKM Collection’.

Nguyen Wahed is delighted to announce that HEK (House of Electronic Arts) Basel has acquired ‘ABO’ (2025) by Leander Herzog and 0xfff into its main collection, through the [aside] smart contract implemented by Distributed Gallery.

‘ABO’ is composed of 150 NFTs integrated into the [aside] protocol. The work explores social dynamics through a unique mechanism: each token possesses its own visual identity, can connect to six others maximum, and unlocks only through interaction with another token. Each connection dynamically modifies the visual appearance of the concerned NFT, making visible the evolution of its relationships in the network.

This threshold of six possible connections gives structural value to each link: creating or receiving a connection becomes a rare, engaging act, charged with aesthetic and symbolic consequences. Inspired by Dunbar’s number (150), ABO transposes the cognitive limit of human relationships into a digital system, transforming NFT value according to their position in the network.

The work was created as part of [aside], a series of exhibitions presented in partnership with Distributed Gallery who created a bespoke protocol allowing artists to use the smart contract as a medium with custom time-lock features. In ABO, connecting a token to another unlocks both, transforming the time-lock into a social mechanism where engagement becomes the key to access.

Entirely designed in HTML, CSS, JavaScript and SVG, ‘ABO’ asserts itself as a native web3 social sculpture, where value emerges less from speculation than from interdependence.

Many congratulations to David Aerne for being awarded the Swiss Design Award 2026 in the Interaction Design category.

Across seven categories, the Swiss Design Awards 2026 celebrate the diversity and vitality of contemporary Swiss design. The awarded projects demonstrate how designers engage with today’s social, ecological and technological challenges, opening up new perspectives.

The award recognises Aerne’s interactive digital projects showcased earlier this year in Messe Basel.

Previously, it was our pleasure to support Aerne and Rik Oostenbroek’s work on a generative colour project, Verloop — Dégradé, that launched as a book at Paris Photo 2024 as an extension of Nguyen Wahed’s Heterotopia showcase.

Verloop — Dégradé was a collaborative exploration building the lateral fluidity of handcrafted gradients with the precision of algorithmic composition. In this work, Oostenbroek’s instinctive color conceptions conjure a visual conversation with Aerne’s code, attempting to find a mode of art that motivates artists to perpetually orchestrate a dance of human intuition with machine logic.

The book centers on the unfolding dialogue between artist and machine. The artist initiates this exchange by crafting a gradient, a starting pulse that the machine responds to, generating variations from the original. The artist then steps back into the process, selecting and curating the most compelling forms, guiding the machine’s output into a unified, final composition.

Extended: Carlos J. Gómez de Llarena’s NYC basement residency at Nguyen Wahed, ‘Present Tension,’ now closing this Saturday, August 1st.

Works include ‘Anonimizer’ (2026), a video installation that captures visitors in the gallery space and erases them from the live video being displayed, presenting the viewers instead as silhouettes of noise, and ‘misvenezuelai’ (2025), a video installation that turns the viewer into a Venezuelan beauty queen in real time. The piece uses a camera, computer vision, and generative AI prompting to render uncanny images contrasting the beauty queen with recent media stereotyping Venezuelan men as criminals and drug traffickers.

An exhibition by Montreal and Brooklyn-based artist j.p.mot (Jean-Pierre Mot) as part of the Nguyen Wahed basement laboratory, whose multidisciplinary practice transforms the discarded materials of everyday consumption into speculative landscapes of memory, labor, and cultural identity. Since 2016, Mot has traveled across North America, Europe, and Asia collecting food packaging, commercial graphics, consumer branding, and industrial remnants encountered during residencies, research trips, and daily life. These objects—designed to circulate briefly before disappearing into waste streams—become the raw material for installations that investigate the fragile relationship between global capitalism and local culture.

“The national flag is reimagined as a performed militaristic sign for a doomed place-based political order.” - john gerrard

We Had Been Citizens of No Country presents works by john gerrard and Anna Barlik which approach the flag as something constructed rather than natural. john gerrard exposes the systems behind it, the data, history, and climate crises that quietly decide a nation’s fate, while Barlik exposes the construction itself, the compositional arbitrariness, and, through physical materials, the seams and supports a finished flag is meant to obscure.

At a moment of sharpening nationalism and tightening borders, both loosen the symbol’s grip and ask what belonging is actually built from.

Open Call: Nguyen Wahed Gallery Residency
Fall/Winter 2026–2027

Following the success of our inaugural residency cohort, Nguyen Wahed Gallery is happy to continue its Artist Residency Program for September 2026 – April 2027.

The program offers artists, cultural practitioners, and educators across all disciplines a free, dedicated studio space with 24/7 access in the gallery’s lower ground space. This initiative invites residents to develop new projects that engage thoughtfully with the space and contribute to the artistic and intellectual vitality of New York City’s creative community.

Each residency lasts 2-4 weeks and concludes with a solo or group presentation, pop-up exhibition, or open studio event, hosted either in the gallery’s main exhibition space or in the lower ground studio itself.

We encourage proposals that explore experimental, site-responsive, interdisciplinary, or process-based practices—particularly works and ideas that may not fit easily within traditional commercial frameworks but expand the field of artistic inquiry.
