Motohiro Takeda “Counting Leaves” is reviewed by Ayesha Raees on The Brooklyn Rail
_
“Counting Leaves” is a metaphor for a funeral. It enchants the audience to partake in the ritual to witness, grieve, and question purpose and existentialism. With every start of the hundredth, there is a silent communication: wait a moment, just a minute or two, see what happens. When the hundreds become a thousand, there is a spell of release in the room and an exchange of awe and relief. Moto, in breaking away from his counting to pouring the leaves into golden mounds, reminds us of the life we ourselves hold in our own bodies and its mortal allowances.
_
Organized by .nyc , “Counting Leaves” is a repetitive, manual-focused, and heavily labor-intensive performance centered on a deceptively simple task: the artist counts every leaf he collected from a single ginkgo tree.

Organized by .nyc , “Counting Leaves” is a repetitive, manual-focused, and heavily labor-intensive performance centered on a deceptively simple task: the artist counts every leaf he collected from a single ginkgo tree. In a rhythmic display of physical endurance, Takeda picks up the leaves one by one, counting them aloud as he moves them from a massive pile on one side of the room to the other, organizing them into smaller, precise clusters on the floor. The performance persists until every individual leaf has been accounted for.

In GATE-1 by Margo, a “potential organism” emerges within a digital sphere, writhing alively and jaggedly glitching, as a voice-over equally theory and prose poem describes its oscillating, unstable, and visceral process of emergence into systems of signification. In Lye’s works, patinated steel surfaces and black-painted timber planks are rearranged throughout the exhibition period, renegotiating their formal aspects and reinscribing themselves onto the layout of the space itself. And in Joranko’s works, gothic aesthetics and subjects, especially the vampire, combine with industrial materials and techniques in sculptures that present cold precision, chaotic disruption, and new forms of an anorganic-inspired vitality.

In collaboration with Interface Gallery, the exhibition brings together a body of generative animations built upon a cellular automaton in the tradition of Conway’s Game of Life, where a minimal set of rules gives rise to extraordinary complexity, and where death is not failure but the system’s natural feature. Alongside the screen-based works, the exhibition also includes a series of plotter drawings on paper — tracing the same generative logic into an anachronistic register.

Harm van den Dorpel (b. 1981) develops a practice centred on dynamic systems that continuously shift and adapt within technological environments. Working across media including drawing, sculpture, computer-generated imagery, and custom software, he constructs frameworks in which artworks evolve over time through algorithmic structures, recursion, and feedback mechanisms.
