香港科學館自1991年4月成立以來，是市民大眾探求科學知識的理想地方。香港科學館透過舉辦不同類型的展覽與趣味科學節目，致力推動科學普及化，並協助學校推展科技教育。有別於傳統的博物館，科學館鼓勵參觀者透過操作展品來發現當中的科學原理，讓他們從中體驗科學的奧妙。

【香港嘅世界級自然遺產】

考考你哋，究竟邊一張先係西貢六角形岩柱嘅相片？🔍

全球著名嘅六角形岩柱外形睇落差唔多，但香港嘅岩柱，喺幾個關鍵地方都與眾不同：
🌋 顏色：淺色，而唔係常見嘅深色
🌋 岩石種類：富含硅質嘅流紋質火山岩，而唔係硅質含量較低嘅玄武岩
🌋 體積：全球同類硅質岩柱中最大之列，個別岩柱闊達兩米

所以如果你揀咗淺色嗰張，就答啱喇！正正係呢個罕有組合，令西貢六角形岩柱被列入為首百個國際地質科學聯合會地質遺產地。

今個星期六（6月13日）係「中國文化和自然遺產日」，正好提醒我哋要好好珍惜呢份大自然嘅饋贈🎁。嚟科學館參觀「深港雙城自然科普主題展」，設有標本同模型展示，介紹深港兩地嘅地質淵源同兩地地質公園喺保育同科普方面嘅合作成果。展期去到6月15日，有興趣就把握機會喇！

【Hong Kong’s World-Class Natural Heritage】

Pop quiz! Can you tell which photo features the hexagonal rock columns of Sai Kung? 🔍

Most famous hexagonal columns around the world look almost the same, but Hong Kong’s are different in a few key ways:
🌋 Colour: light-coloured, not the usual dark
🌋 Rock type: silica-rich rhyolitic tuff, not the lower-silica basalt
🌋 Size: among the largest silicic columns on Earth — up to 2 metres wide

So if you guessed the pale one, you’re right! That rare combination is exactly why Sai Kung’s hexagonal rock columns were named one of the First 100 International Union of Geological Sciences Geological Heritage Sites.

This Saturday (13 June) is “China Cultural and Natural Heritage Day” — a perfect reminder to treasure this gift from nature🎁. Visit the “Shenzhen and Hong Kong Joint Exhibition on Nature and Science Popularisation” at the Science Museum, featuring specimens and models that introduce the geological connection between both cities and the collaborative achievements of both geoparks in conservation and science popularisation. #香港非遺之科學 - 基圍操作技藝
平時有冇留意街市嘅基圍蝦🦐？佢哋之所以叫「基圍蝦」，係因為佢哋傳統上係喺潮間帶嘅鹹淡水泥灘上，以圍壆建成嘅「基圍」中養殖出嚟。而呢種傳統養殖方式仲被列為「香港非物質文化遺產」之一！

首先，呢個方法神奇之處係漁民無須外購幼蝦魚苗，而係通過自然界潮汐漲退🌊嚟飼養同捕獲魚蝦。喺漲潮時打開閘門，魚苗同幼蝦就會隨水流入基圍；經過約3至4個月自然長大後，只要喺閘門加設漁網，趁退潮時打開閘門，基圍內嘅水會自然流走，就能收獲長大咗嘅魚蝦啦！

如果你有去米埔睇過基圍，佢哋通常係建喺紅樹林周邊。由於潮間帶定期被海水淹沒，土壤鹽分較高，而且經常處於低氧狀態，因此紅樹植物演化出多種適應機制。以香港常見嘅紅樹品種「秋茄樹」為例，佢嘅根部可過濾大部分鹽分，仲會長出啲露出泥面嘅根用嚟呼吸。當紅樹枯葉掉落🍃，微生物會將佢分解成為魚蝦嘅天然食糧。

故事仲未完，當收成季結束，基圍排水後會變成裸露嘅泥灘，吸引候鳥🐦嚟覓食同棲息。整個過程充分善用咗潮汐漲退同濕地資源🌳，增加可持續性，令基圍操作既富有傳統民間智慧，又能維持本地嘅生物多樣性。

要守護海洋，首先要了解佢深藏的奧祕。雖然我哋唔係住喺海洋入面，但其實海洋同我哋息息相關，甚至超乎想像咁親近💕！例如香港浸會大學生物系邱建文教授團隊，近年就喺同大海潮汐相通嘅米埔基圍蝦塘🦐發現新嘅箱形水母物種！證明即使喺本地水域，依然有無數未知嘅海洋生命等待我哋去發掘！

【Protect the ocean🌊with reimagination】

Every year on 8th June, we celebrate World Oceans Day, and this year’s theme is “Reimagine” ✨! With the entry into force of the UN’s Agreement on Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction, we are no longer just passive inheritors of the ocean’s resources, but its active guardians 💪!

To protect the ocean, we must first understand the secrets hidden deep within it. Although we do not live in the ocean, its relationship with humans is closer than we expect💕! For instance, Professor Qiu Jianwen’s team from the Department of Biology at Hong Kong Baptist University discovered a new box jellyfish species in Mai Po’s 𝘎𝘦𝘪 𝘞𝘢𝘪 brackish shrimp ponds 🦐, which are connected to the ocean’s tides. This shows that even in our local waters, there are still countless unknown marine lives waiting for us to discover!

【Event Highlights: “Eco-Travel with Zheng He” Science Lecture】

If you have already visited the “Wildlife Photographer of the Year” and enjoyed ecological photography works from around the world but still want more, then you should join this Science Lecture to see how local photographer capture nature through lenses.

This lecture invites Mr. SEE Chun-lung, Gomen, Marine Science Programme Manager at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum, to guide us along the maritime routes of Zheng He’s voyages during the Ming Dynasty, exploring the natural ecology of Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Kenya. Mr. See is an ecology educator and an award-winning photographer 🏆📸. He will take us to retrace Zheng He’s voyages ⛵ from the perspectives of photography 🎥, ecology 🐢, and conservation 🦅!

This campaign encourages students to step into nature 🌳, and learn more about Hong Kong’s rich ecological resources through observation and the art of photography. 西金工匠嘅巧手技藝，猶如金飾上嘅閃閃金光，同樣經得起時間考驗，光芒不減✨。首飾製作技藝，又稱「打金」，係香港非物質文化遺產項目之一。為響應「香港非遺月2026」，我哋特別推出非遺實驗班，畀大朋友體驗首飾製作📿。活動邀請到周生生貴金屬化驗所導師親自指導，參加者只需運用簡單嘅工具同銅線，就可以親手製作獨一無二嘅飾品。透過「電鍍魔法」，仲可以體驗「點銅成金」嘅神奇過程。

【ICH Experiment: Journey into Golden Jewellery】

The exquisite craftsmanship of karat gold artisans, much like the shimmering light on a piece of gold jewellery, continues to shine brilliantly over time✨. Jewellery Making Technique, also known as “goldsmithing”, is one of the items in the Intangible Cultural Heritage inventory of Hong Kong. In support of “Hong Kong ICH Month 2026”, we are launching an ICH laboratory class specially designed for grown-up friends to experience jewellery 📿making firsthand. Guided by instructors from the Chow Sang Sang Precious Metal Laboratory, participants will use simple tools and copper wire to craft their own unique piece of jewellery. Through the “magic of electroplating”, participants can even experience the fascinating process of “turning copper into gold”.

We welcome all grown-up friends to sign up for “Journey into Golden Jewellery”. Come explore the properties of gold, experience the electroplating technique widely used in the gold jewellery industry, and uncover the science behind it!

【香港科學館35周年🎊| 解構「能量波🔴」嘅內部祕密✨】

講到科學館充滿動感嘅展品「能量穿梭機」，又點少得介紹喺兩座高塔之間穿梭嘅圓球🔴「能量波」呢？

其實能量波嘅設計一啲都唔簡單，等我哋切開🪚 佢睇睇先~大家可以見到裏面有一層厚厚嘅白色內層，呢層係由唔同密度嘅聚氨酯（Polyurethane）材料填充而成，有效分散同埋吸收撞擊力。正因為咁，能量波先至可以喺反覆嘅撞擊後💥，仍然冇穿冇爛💪。

而橙色嘅外殼就係由硬質聚氨酯製成，裏面添加咗潤滑劑，而且表面經礦物油塗層處理過，有助於減少摩擦力，咁樣能量波就可以碌得更順暢喇💨。

[HKScM 35th Anniversary🎊| Uncovering the Secrets of the Energy Machine Balls🔴✨]

Speaking of our dynamic exhibit, the Energy Machine, we cannot miss the balls🔴that travel between the two towers!

In fact, these are no ordinary balls. Let’s cut 🪚 one open and take a look inside! You can see, there is a thick white inner layer made of polyurethane materials with varying densities. This design effectively disperses and absorbs impact forces, allowing the balls to withstand repeated collisions💥and remain completely intact💪.

The orange outer shell is made of rigid polyurethane infused with a lubricant and treated with a mineral oil finish. This reduces friction, allowing the balls to roll more smoothly💨.

Come visit our 35th Anniversary Exhibition to find out more, and try rolling🫳an Energy Machine ball along the track to feel it for yourself!
