Located

at the top of Hong Kong Park, the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre – vA! – is housed in Cassels Block, which was built in the first decade of the 20th century as an extension of the British Army's Victoria Barracks to provide married quarters for officers. The barracks were handed over to the government and incorporated in the Hong Kong Park project in 1985. The Centre was opened in 1992. Constructed in a cascade down the hillside, the Grade I historic building originally comprised four three-storey quarters with a brick, limewashed façade and a triangular gable in an ancient Greek style between the blocks. The east and west sides featured open colonnaded verandas typical of the Edwardian Classical Revival style. vA! is an open, multi-directional art space that focuses on art education, research and exchange. Fitted with specialist equipment, the venue is home to exhibition space and an invigorating creative ambience. Whether you are a full-time artist, an amateur enthusiast or just an interested member of the public, vA! is a place nurturing your artistic talent and providing opportunities to create art yourself. We also invite artists to come and conduct cross-disciplinary art experiments, to explore the possibilities of applying technology and knowledge from other disciplines in the creation of art and to identify new directions in projects ranging from digital creation to site-specific and multimedia installations.

【Poetic Clay — Ceramics Workshop】

Clay may seem humble, yet it holds endless possibilities. Inspired by nature and daily life, this workshop guides participants from observation to creation through composition, glazing, carving, and painting, exploring the dialogue between ceramics and painting. Participants will learn the basics of blue-and-white and underglaze decoration, draw inspiration from classical works, landscapes, plants, and light, and gradually complete a piece that combines craftsmanship, lived experience, and personal style.

Led by veteran artist Terence Lee, who has devoted over forty years to ceramics and painting since graduating from the California College of the Arts in 1984, the workshop draws on his extensive teaching and creative experience at institutions including The Chinese University of Hong Kong and HKU SPACE. His works blend craftsmanship with a sense of everyday life, and he guides participants to discover their own rhythm and enjoyment in the creative process.

【Nature in Stone: Seal Carving Workshop】

Seal carving is more than inscribing characters onto stone; it is a way of holding thought, rhythm, and a quiet poetic spirit within a small square space. From the structure of seal script and the cadence of each line to the pressure of the blade and the white space left by the seal, the workshop invites participants to experience how traditional craft can become a playful and imaginative form of contemporary creation. Starting from everyday objects and natural forms, participants will learn to read seal script, develop a design, carve on stone, and mount their finished work, transforming lived experience, typographic beauty, and creative intuition into a unique personal imprint.

Kelvin Ma is a contemporary seal carver with a keen sensitivity to various types of materials. By integrating traditional and contemporary creative approaches, his works display a rich and diverse artistic style. His pieces have been exhibited at the Hong Kong Museum of Art and Fine Art Asia.

Blurred playground images on fabric record the artist’s six months of residency steps. Using transfer-printing techniques, Jay Lau created this series “Transferred Diary” by transferring photographs of Birdwood Block’s current site onto fabric and binding them into a book, tracing its transformation from a military dormitory to a children’s park.

Art Talk – The Scale, The Hand, The Body: From Herb Cabinet to Art Creation | SO Wing-po

SO Wing-po graduated from the University of Washington and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her artworks have been exhibited at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Tai Kwun Contemporary, and major institutions and biennials across Asia. Using Chinese herbs as a medium, she creates installations, sculptures, and videos that explore the hidden connections and systems within nature. For her, nature has never been “whole”; it is matter that has been cut, dried, ground, and stored in herbal medicine cabinets. These memories shape the foundation of her practice: classification, transformation, and tactile judgment. The talk begins with everyday manual tasks, such as weighing herbs, removing impurities, slicing, and pounding, to examine the “knowledge of the hand.” It considers how a practitioner’s hand learns when something is “enough” and how an artist’s hand recognizes when it feels “right.”

Did you know that the Cassels Block — home to vA! — once had a “twin”? The former Birdwood Block shared the same architectural features and purpose, but it was eventually demolished. Its original site is now the children’s playground.

What would Hong Kong Park look like today if the Birdwood Block still stood?

Artist-in-residence Jay Lau reimagines the lost building through archives, AI, woodblock prints, and concrete. His works are scattered across vA!’s space — come explore this parallel world!

Opens 12 March. Free! Stay tuned! 😊
