Laying the groundwork for homegrown artistic innovation A new wing with a glass canopy was added when Cassels Block was converted into vA!.

Located

at the top of Hong Kong Park, the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre – vA! – is housed in Cassels Block, which was built in the first decade of the 20th century as an extension of the British Army's Victoria Barracks to provide married quarters for officers. The barracks were handed over to the government and incorporated in the Hong Kong Park project in 1985. The Centre was opened in 1992. Constructed in a cascade down the hillside, the Grade I historic building originally comprised four three-storey quarters with a brick, limewashed façade and a triangular gable in an ancient Greek style between the blocks. The east and west sides featured open colonnaded verandas typical of the Edwardian Classical Revival style. vA! is an open, multi-directional art space that focuses on art education, research and exchange. Fitted with specialist equipment, the venue is home to exhibition space and an invigorating creative ambience. Whether you are a full-time artist, an amateur enthusiast or just an interested member of the public, vA! is a place nurturing your artistic talent and providing opportunities to create art yourself. We also invite artists to come and conduct cross-disciplinary art experiments, to explore the possibilities of applying technology and knowledge from other disciplines in the creation of art and to identify new directions in projects ranging from digital creation to site-specific and multimedia installations.

【Art and AI Experimental Workshop】

This workshop takes inspiration from plant structures. Through an interdisciplinary approach, participants will explore the connections between traditional art, natural science, and artificial intelligence. Participants will learn the basics of AI-assisted design and use it to develop their ideas into digital models or concept images. They will then apply deconstruction techniques and 3D printing to create experimental sculptural works inspired by plant structures. The workshop encourages participants to integrate these methods into their own creative practice, opening up new possibilities through the interaction of different materials, technologies, and ways of thinking.

The workshop is led by two instructors from different fields. Visual artist Tse Yim-on explores visual symbols in popular culture and brings contemporary perspectives to traditional artistic media. Popular science writer on plants, Wong Tin-hang provides a foundation in plant science, helping participants connect artistic ideas with the natural world. Together, they will guide participants to rethink plant forms through the perspectives of art, science, and technology, challenge conventional approaches, and expand their creative vision.

Drawing on historical images of Cassels Block and Birdwood Block, laser-engraved woodblocks “Fictional Scenery” extends the scenery with AI, blending reality with fiction. Rather than simply recreating the old buildings, the work lets viewers see how “real history” and “imagined scenery” overlap, bringing a vanished place back into view.

WONG Hiu-yan graduated from the Department of Environmental Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and worked at the Shiu-Ying Hu Herbarium. She is also the author and illustrator of Botanical Illustrated Guide to Hong Kong Native Plants. In this Art Talk, she will share how botanical art transforms plant structure, colour, and spatial relationships into images rich in beauty and imagination. 【Nature in Stone: Seal Carving Workshop】

Seal carving is more than inscribing characters onto stone; it is a way of holding thought, rhythm, and a quiet poetic spirit within a small square space. From the structure of seal script and the cadence of each line to the pressure of the blade and the white space left by the seal, the workshop invites participants to experience how traditional craft can become a playful and imaginative form of contemporary creation. Starting from everyday objects and natural forms, participants will learn to read seal script, develop a design, carve on stone, and mount their finished work, transforming lived experience, typographic beauty, and creative intuition into a unique personal imprint.

Kelvin Ma is a contemporary seal carver with a keen sensitivity to various types of materials. By integrating traditional and contemporary creative approaches, his works display a rich and diverse artistic style. His pieces have been exhibited at the Hong Kong Museum of Art and Fine Art Asia.

【Plant-Based Handmade Paper & Bookbinding Workshop】

Plant papermaking combines natural materials with handcraft techniques. In this workshop, the instructor will guide students through professional techniques, including preparing plant fibers, making paper, pressing, drying, and binding. Starting with natural materials, students will learn how to create handmade paper. They can add items such as tea leaves, tree leaves, flower petals, or coffee grounds to create paper with different textures, colors, and natural scents. The course encourages students to explore how paper changes in texture, color, and shape, and to apply these qualities in their own artistic work. Through repeated practice and experimentation, students will see the many possibilities of paper. Participants will learn practical skills in traditional papermaking and bookbinding, and complete a handmade paper portfolio, experiencing the full process from raw materials to finished pieces.

Because YEUNG, the founder of Somoodstudio, is passionate about exploring the possibilities of paper and actively promotes the craft of handmade paper. Having organized workshops for numerous art institutions, she brings extensive teaching experience.
