WKM Gallery

WKM Gallery Founded by William Kayne Mukai in 2023, WKM Gallery is a vibrant and innovative art space in Hong Kong.

With a unique background combining French and Japanese heritage, William is committed to fostering cultural connections and promoting artists globally. The gallery serves as a platform for both emerging and established artists, encouraging creativity and cultural exchange. Initially focusing on connecting Japan and Hong Kong, William now aims to weave art from around the world into the dynamic Hon

g Kong art scene. The design of the gallery seamlessly merges Japanese architectural elements with the industrial ambiance of Wong Chuk Hang. Embracing the concept of "ma" (間), which represents the space between elements and serves as a threshold between viewer and art, the gallery aspires to provide viewers with a richer aesthetic experience and a personal connection with the artwork.

Now open at WKM Gallery, Iori Nagashima’s BETWEEN presents new oil paintings developed following the artist’s extended residency at SIDE SPACE. The exhibition brings together still lifes and figure paintings shaped by motifs and subjects encountered in Hong Kong and its local community. Through quiet scenes, layered surfaces, and everyday objects, BETWEEN considers the space between presence and absence, subject and viewer, observation and connection. On view until 29 August 2026.

Born in Osaka in 1997 and based in Tokyo, Iori Nagashima received his BA in Oil Painting from Musashino Art University in 2020. His practice observes the unconscious beauty hidden within everyday life, drawing out moments of stillness from the bustle of the city and the routines of those around him. Working through oil painting while also drawing on photography, video, and personal visual memory, he reconstructs fragments of daily life into images that seem to hover between the ordinary and the extraordinary, the present and the past.

Opening this Saturday, BETWEEN, is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong and presents new oil paintings developed following his extended residency at SIDE SPACE. These Open Studio photographs offer a glimpse of the works while they were still taking shape before moving into the gallery.

BETWEEN opens on 6 June 2026, with an Opening Reception from 4 - 8 pm in the presence of the artist.

Two weeks left to see ‘HKG-TYO 1974-2023’ before it closes on 23 May 2026.

Greg Girard spent over four decades photographing Hong Kong and Tokyo during some of their most transformative years. Arriving in Hong Kong at eighteen, he found himself in cities that were changing faster than anyone could document, walking the streets at night with no particular agenda, just a camera and a genuine curiosity about the world in front of him.

These images are quiet, intimate, and surprisingly hard to forget. The back alleys, the late-night bars, the faces of people going about their lives in places that no longer exist. There is no nostalgia being performed here, only an honest record of what two extraordinary cities looked and felt like at a particular moment in time.

Japanese artist Iori Nagashima is currently in residence at Side Space , developing new work for his upcoming solo exhibition at WKM Gallery this June.

As part of the project, we are inviting the public to submit everyday objects to be painted as still-life subjects. Anything goes — a favourite book, a keepsake, a daily item — as long as it fits within 30 x 30 x 30 cm. Send a photo, dimensions, and a brief description to [email protected] by 13 May.

Join us on 7 May for an open studio evening — step inside Iori’s working space, see the paintings in progress, and meet the artist. We’ll finish the evening on the rooftop with drinks and that classic TST atmosphere.

‘HKG-TYO 1974-2023’ pairs together, for the first time, Girard’s photographs of Hong Kong and Tokyo from the 70s to the present day. Girard’s first contact with Hong Kong in 1974 sparked an interest which extended to Tokyo in 1976, and he continued to commute between the two for many years following.

This exhibition centers mostly on the transition from the 70s to the 80s, a period marked by Hong Kong’s transformation into an international financial hub, just around the same time that Japan was sprinting headfirst into its decadent bubble era. Through Girard’s lens, the acceleration of these two cosmopolitan centers is depicted with purposeful intent and slow tenderness. There is a synergy between the artist’s curiosity and the ambition of two developing cosmopolises that were once on the cusp of becoming “cyberpunk utopias.” The sincerity and vibrance with which Girard captured these cities point toward a collectively hopeful attitude about the future. And while it is easy to interpret them as a reminder of “the good old days,” Girard’s photos are more than just a trigger for nostalgia— instead, they serve as a prompt for contemplation and an aesthetic experience of nowness; a reminder of what it means to live in the present and look toward the future of the cities we’ll change.
