Each edition shows different scenes inside the book, with the string and stars changing.
On manuscript paper, time flows from right to left.
When many sheets are bound into a book, turning the pages makes the scenes flow.
When I drew on this paper, it felt like a story appeared.
What had been still began to move slowly, as if flowing.

Cole Mohr’s Tattoo
Cole Mohr was a fashion model who rose to fame when I was a teenager. His wary, rebellious expression and the tattoos covering his body left a strong impression on me. I often browsed fashion magazines featuring him at a local bookshop near my home. Even in summer the shop was unusually cool, and the sweat from cycling there would quickly disappear. Mohr appeared frequently in magazines like Huge. At that time, POPEYE was not the stylish magazine it is today but rather awkward.
When you search “Cole Mohr / tattoo” online, you still find portraits of him taken by Terry Richardson—images that capture the spirit of that era, when American Apparel was hugely popular.

TSUMORI CHISATO’s Hoodie
In high school, I once opened a fashion magazine in the library and saw Shingo Katori wearing a Tsumori Chisato hoodie. The hoodie had an all-over print of deer and rabbits drawn in the style of an old American picture book. I clearly remember being struck with the thought: I want to be able to wear something like that! At the same time, I felt it would never suit me—I was short, with broad shoulders and wavy hair, and such clothes would only make me stand out in the wrong way. Even at a school without uniforms, a boy wearing something like that would likely be bullied.
Around the same period, I bought a vintage cardigan with a cherry pattern that I really liked, but I lacked the courage to wear it and ended up selling it after only two tries. Still, I enjoyed thinking about what kind of clothes might suit my body, and how to work within those limits. In a way, that mindset continues to shape my creative practice today.

This work depicts a scene from American Domestic Medicine by American novelist Rebecca Brown, which describes her experience caring for her mother. Brown, who has been open about her identity as a le***an, is a writer I find especially compelling.
In this scene, the protagonist washes and massages her dying mother’s body with oil. She fills a bowl with warm water, adding rose petals sent by her brother and herbs from the garden—sage, basil, rosemary—so the water is fragrant. She gently cleans the body that had carried her mother through life, the body that had given them life, the body from which they now wipe away its final sweat.

Astrea
9 October – 7 November 2025
Sansiao Gallery HK

Astrea is the second chapter of Sansiao Gallery HK’s 2025 programme, which reflects on individuality, the release from roles unconsciously shaped by society, and the freedom of choice.

Taking its title from the pen name of 17th-century writer Aphra Behn, this exhibition turns to themes of voice, storytelling, and the courage to speak desire. Behn, often recognised as Britain’s first professional female author, is remembered for her novel Oroonoko, which criticised slavery, as well as for her poetry that addressed personal freedom with unusual candour.

The exhibition presents works by Atsushi Nemoto and Fuyuki Kanai, two contemporary Japanese artists who approach language and narrative in distinct ways. Their works give form to emotion and lived experience: some speaking directly, others suggesting what remains unspoken—the ambiguous, the half-felt, the silent.

In addition, the exhibition includes a work by Jack Pierson from Sansiao collection. Known for his use of text, photography, and assemblage, Pierson explores memory, desire, and the fragility of human experience, situating Nemoto and Kanai’s practices within a wider dialogue across generations and cultures.

Together, these works invite us to listen closely to the quiet yet insistent force of narrative, where imagination and language meet, and to reflect on the possibilities of expressing one’s inner voice.
