Over time, some businesses close and their signs might be saved, others are reborn with new neon iterations, but the city moves on regardless.

Keith MacGregor's City of Lights is not just about the signs; it’s about preserving family memories in a Hong Kong in constant flux. Cardin Chan, the book's co-author, introduced us to key people involved in Hong Kong neon and is an important figure herself for preserving its tangible neon signs and oral history.

Neon was never just "urban wallpaper." It was the result of immense skill, engineering, and imagination.

City of Lights by Keith MacGregor honors the master benders and installers who built the visual identity of our city.

The Soul of Hong Kong, Fan Ho's Humanist Vision
The 6th Ota Kosan Collection Exhibition

Fan Ho (1931–2016), one of the most celebrated Asian photographers of the mid‑twentieth century, continually evolved throughout his prolific career, steadily refining his singular artistic vision.

In his early years, he was celebrated for his meticulously crafted street scenes. Light and shadow were orchestrated with geometric precision, and people appeared as actors in a dramatic, stylised tableau. This masterful control of atmosphere and structure earned him widespread international acclaim.

Over time, his priorities shifted toward something far more intimate. Moving physically and emotionally closer to his subjects, he focused on the inner lives of those before his lens. In works like Children’s Paradise and Her Study, he captured the resilience, vitality, and quiet dignity of everyday existence.

As his practice matured, Fan Ho turned toward a direct documentary language, favouring authenticity over embellishment. He felt a responsibility to confront the stark social realities of his time, proving that humanism in art must encompass both uplifting beauty and unvarnished truth.

This exhibition traces his journey from formal elegance to profound social engagement. We invite you to experience the depth and richness of his vision.

"Uncle Pork" © Marcel Heijnen

On the final day of KunstRAI 2026, we spotlight Dutch photographer Marcel Heijnen, who, fascinated by Hong Kong's feline residents, has documented the "little emperors" of the city's retail kingdoms.

While the cats are the furry celebrities of his photographs, each shot provides an insightful look at Hong Kong’s traditional trades. From dried fish and rice to paper offerings, the backdrops present a vivid portrait of local culture and the unique shops these cats inhabit.
