These days, we are all somewhat familiar with the idea of a “persona”: speaking differently in different settings, and presenting different sides of ourselves on different platforms. Each side feels real, yet none may fully capture who we are.
It turns out that this imagination of multiple identities was not unfamiliar to people in the past. In the painting 𝐻𝑜𝑛𝑔𝑤𝑢 𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑦𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐹𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑝𝑡𝑠 (𝑆𝑖 𝑋𝑖𝑎𝑛𝑔) 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐷𝑖𝑎𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑑 𝑆𝑢𝑡𝑟𝑎, Hongwu—Qianlong Emperor’s cousin—appears as a Confucian scholar, a lama, a lay Buddhist, and a Daoist, paired respectively with bamboo, orchid, plum blossom, and chrysanthemum. Each pairing evokes a different spiritual quality, while also seeming to recall the “four concepts” in the Diamond Sutra. The title’s phrase 𝑦𝑖𝑟𝑢 (一如) gently returns us to a central question: when identities shift and appearances accumulate, can we still recognise our truest self?
