Videotage

Videotage Asia’s New Media Art Collective since 1986 To promote a free and open DIY culture, Videotage begins to host Dorkbot-HK in 2010.

With the continuous support from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Videotage organizes exhibitions, workshops, performances, artist-in-residencies and exchange programs to bring media art closer to our everyday life. Curatorial projects not only takes place at Videotage’s office at the Cattle Depot Artist Village, or formerly at the Oil Street Artist Village, but expands to different spheres

in the public – at shopping mall, at school, and in collaboration with museum and art centre locally and worldwide. VMAC (Videotage Media Art Collection) was officiated in 2008 with mission to collect, preserve and build an extensive archive of video and media art of Hong Kong. Representing more than 20 years of development in media art, VMAC, that is opened to general public in 2011, together with the eight volumes of The Best of Videotage, a publication series that captures over 100 artists’ work in print, are of high significant educational value to the discourse of media archeology and art history in Hong Kong. Videotage, a listed media art organisation in UNESCO, has been long-term collaborator with other media art organizations to for the betterment of video art and new media art locally and worldwide. Videotage has been the strategic partner of Microwave International New Media Arts Festival, that celebrates its 15th Anniversary in 2011. Videotage is also invited to participate in the Venice Biennale of Architecture, Gwangju Biennial, Guangzhou Triennial, ISEA Festival and etc. International exposure also appears in form of exchange programs with the British Arts Festival, the Goethe-Institut, also participated in Remake HK, Project Unlimited organised by the Guggenheim Museum and YouTube in 2010. Videotage conceives new media art as a cultural movement that brings art and technology productions to nodes of intersections in the digital and network era. The network will be a hotbed of creativity and innovation, where artist, technologist, academia, practitioner from both private and public spheres, actively engage with technology and address contemporary social, political and cultural concerns. With the success of Wikitopia in 2010, we will continue exploring how citizen media and social media reshape humankind in the era of network culture. We will also continue providing service and support to media artist and general public for the development of media art and strengthen the position of Videotage as a cultural hub of knowledge transfer for art, culture and technology in the local, regional and international regime. Cyanne van den Houten: Phantasmagoria 幽園弱訊

Videotage is pleased to present Phantasmagoria, a solo exhibition by Netherlands-based artist and tinkerer Cyanne van den Houten, working across cyber sculptures, generative code and technological folklore. During a 6-week residency in Hong Kong, they investigated outdated and renovated technological configurations in Hong Kong, mapping the roles these places played in the past and their present status.

Drawing on Phantasmagoria–an early form of screen-illusion theatre–they repurpose this atmospheric space of horror to reflect local spatial configurations that underpin the city’s technological development. Rather than terrifying visitors with concealed mechanisms, the exhibition turns the dark room into a space where “apparitions” voice obsolete knowledge and failed experiments. It frames technology not as seamless progression, but as haunted, materialised, and deeply entangled with histories of (emotional) labor, control and capitalism.

Alongside humming field recordings and flickering searchlights, the artist’s self-built sculptural devices—used as ‘ghost detectors’—display environmental parameters such as current, heat, and network presence, registering energy flows to sense lingering presence in vanished sites.

Scales of Passage

Throughout history, ‘mobility’ has been a fundamental means of survival, while ‘diaspora’ describes the migration and displacement of entire communities. While the two terms differ by a single character in Chinese, the latter carries the weight of a seismic shift—a departure towards an unknown future. Regardless of the catalyst, such migrations represent more than just trails across oceans; they reveal a confluence of personal memories, collective trajectories, and the hybrid identities of future generations, merging through clear intersections and subtle, intangible flows. These memories accumulate over time, settling within the body as a continuous negotiation between generations and eras.

Situated across the Pacific Ocean, Indonesia and Hong Kong have distinct historical and linguistic trajectories; yet, both regions share cultural commonalities that imply profound and often overlooked linkages. While the Dragon is often a symbol of evil in the West, the Naga and the Dragon in Southeast and East Asia are revered as guardian spirits and auspicious creatures. As we bask in the symbolism of being the ‘descendents’ to such deities, how do we trace our heritage through these cultural fragments? Beyond shared beliefs and values, can individual and collective trauma can be understood and communicated? What experiences have layered together to form our identities today?

Videotage (Hong Kong) and Forum Lenteng (Jakarta) proudly present the touring screening series Scales of Passage. Drawing upon their deep-rooted commitment to promoting media art, the two organisations have curated a selection of video works from Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Southeast Asia, unearthing social histories through personal narratives. The programme explores the diverse interpretations of ‘diaspora’ within the contexts of Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, reflecting on how the experience of migration constructs and reconstructs collective and individual identities.

Ghost Hardware Phantasmagoria Interfaces | A Hacking Workshop with Cyanne van den Houten

A hands-on tools sharing session where participants will explore how easy and fun it is to build interactive interfaces from techno-trash and conductive material.
Make your own game controller or instrument!

Date: 2 May 2026
Time: 14:30–17:00
Quota: Max. 8 Participants (registration is needed - https://forms.gle/wZkoxk9eD4YZSQU67)
Venue: V54 .plk (54 Village Road, Happy Valley)
RSVP: link in bio
No prior hacking experience needed, but welcome!

Broken microwaves hum with haunted syntax. Plastic cables twitch with residual signals. LED fragments flicker like afterimages of machine dreams. Within these discarded systems, something lingers…

This workshop unfolds as part of the artist research project: Phantasmagoria, an ongoing investigates of the ecological and material afterlives of generative AI systems. Behind every “immaterial” system lies an infrastructure of extraction, energy consumption, and eventual decay. Devices are abandoned, data centers expand, and invisible processes leave very real traces.

Here, the technological trash heap becomes a site of reanimation and inquiry: a speculative landscape where the ghosts of computation—forgotten datasets, obsolete hardware, and fragmented intelligences—continue to circulate. During this workshop, you are invited to make contact.

Using conductive scraps and your own hands, you will build a ritual interface: a hacked-together button. Each press becomes an invocation—triggering sound, text, or image from generative systems or your own collected data. Through this process, we reconnect the seemingly immaterial outputs to their physical, ecological substrates.

PARTICIPANTS WILL LEARN

* Basic hacking strategies to repurpose existing electronics
* How to make a button from unconventional materials / anything conductive!
* How to code an interaction from a button with Makey Makey in Processing (play audio, generate images, text – whatever you dream of!)

The goal is not to build “useful” tools, but to have fun and open portals: to listen to the broken, flickering parts of systems we once tried to abandon.
Let the rogue voices in the trash heap sing again! :)

USEFUL INFO FOR PARTICIPANTS

- Bring your own laptop/computer and any conductive material or techno-junk you want to revive: broken electronics, stray cables, haunted buttons.
There will also be some material present to work with! :)
- If you want to take your circuit with you the price of the Makey Makey is 230 hkd. You can repurpose this easily for your own projects!
- For the workshop, you will work with processing.org, please install the software beforehand
- Due to limited quota, reservations of the workshop beyond the first EIGHT will be placed on a waiting list. Successful applicants will be notified by 27 April. Should any successful applicants be unable to attend, Videotage will notify applicants on the waiting list separately.

地點:V54(香港跑馬地村道54號)

[ ] Videotage extends a warm welcome to Cyanne van den Houten, who will arrive in Hong Kong to be our resident artist for the next two months, supported by the Open Call Residency Videotage of !

Cyanne van den Houten is a media artist from the Netherlands. They work hands-on with DIY electronics and generative algorithmic systems to expose embedded power structures. Rooted in q***r, feminist, and noise ideologies, their large-scale interactive installations connect cyber-sculptures with chatbots, archives, and game environments through networked protocols. They create mystical, immersive spaces in which audiences can enter into dialogue with magnified aspects of our increasingly sentient-seeming machines.

As founder of the media-art collective Telemagic and the Rotterdam artist-run space .zip, they foster collaborative explorations of digital culture through artistic research, tool-sharing, and hackathons.

Their most recent solo exhibition Model Collapse (with Ymer Marinus) transformed the extractive, earthbound infrastructure of AI into a generative landscape filled with digital relics, addressing mystification, bias, compute maximalism, and labor in technological supply chains.

At Videotage, they will reanimate 18th-century screen illusion theatre techniques to make the material and cognitive devastation caused by AI production in the Pearl River Delta sensorially perceptible.

We are excited to show Cyanne around Hong Kong and meet with the artist community! Keep your eyes peeled for what they’ll bring to Cattle Depot next 👀

Art Basel HK 2026: “Rewind-Still-REC” - screening

“Rewind-Still-REC” transforms the single-channel video screen into a laboratory of temporal elasticity, where the laws of physics yield to the logic of the edit. By engaging with action-focused works, the program moves beyond the documentary function of the camera to explore visual experiences that are impossible to realize in our daily reality. Here, the recording device is not a passive witness but an active conspirator; through techniques of reversal, playback, and montage, the artists deconstruct the linear flow of existence, illustrating the "truth" of movement through manipulating the on-screen portrayal of time.

The selection traverses the spectrum from the mechanical to the metaphysical. Yuan Goang-Ming and Yao Qingmei utilize the body as a site of endurance and alienation, whether through the uncanny friction of walking backwards against the forward march of the world, or the anxious, repetitive flagging of an ideal. While scenes of the cityscape follow closely to Ernest Fung on the road, Eric Siu’s slapstick juxtaposition of pop culture shrinks the breathtaking chasing scenes in movies into pixel-sized video games. Alice Wong and Winsome Dumalagan Wong delve into the architecture of memory itself. Navigating between personal storytelling and the digital void of satellite imagery, they reconstruct civilizations from the debris of the archive, considering nuances between the seen materials and the occurred reality.

Conducted in English. Free Admission. Online Registration is needed. RSVP link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ecofutures-planetary-thinking-and-infrastructures-tickets-1982422687624

Speakers: Chris Cheung (artist & creative and artistic director of XCEPT and XCEED, HK), Kwan Q Li (artist, HK), Anahita Razmi (Artist & Senior Lecturer & Associate at TrAIN, UAL)
Moderator: Prof Paul Goodwin (TrAIN, UAL, London)

This panel explores how urban growth and AI-driven global infrastructures intersect with environmental conditions. XCEPT’s works explore how radiation, climate, and AI shape human perception and ideology, reimagining planetary consciousness through invisible forces and speculative futures. Bridging the macro-ecologies of vegetative survival and AI psyche, Li’s Urban Weeds, Digital Insomniacs reimagines ‘planetary health’ as a symbiosis between biological resilience and algorithmic unpredictability that seeks the ‘wild’ both in the split of a pavement and in the glitch of a neural network. Situated within Razmi’s broader practice of investigating cultural translation and economic circulation across Global North–Global South vectors, their collaborative project Darookhaneh Apotheke Pharmacy foregrounds how care, control, and representation are structurally entangled.
