Have you ever heard of a "Chinese Room"?

Step into the East Bedroom of Harewood House in the UK, and you won't find traditional English decor. Instead, you'll be greeted by an immersive "Chinese Room"—the ultimate symbol of luxury and high fashion among 18th-century European aristocracy! 🏯✨

At the time, European elites were utterly captivated by decorating their spaces top-to-bottom with Asian art brought from across the oceans:

👔 Green & Gold Clothes Press: This eye-catching cabinet is a masterpiece by Thomas Chippendale, the premier 18th-century British cabinetmaker. He used "japanning" techniques to vividly replicate the lush texture of Chinese lacquerwork.

🏺 Chinese Ornaments: To complement the aesthetic, exquisite Chinese export porcelain, vases, and polychrome bowls were proudly displayed atop furniture and throughout the space.

🖼️ Illustrations of Tilling and Weaving Wallpaper: Moving away from the typical bird-and-flower motifs seen in other British estates, this wallpaper was hand-painted by 18th-century Chinese artisans on mulberry bark paper. Each unique panel merges to form a room-encompassing panorama, illustrating the complete processes of rice cultivation, tea harvesting, silk production, and porcelain making—a vibrant showcase of idealized Qing-era agriculture and craft production.

Far beyond mere visual adornments, these items mirror the profound western imagination surrounding eastern science, technology, and culture at the time...

📅 Lecture Preview: In this presentation, Professor Zhao will use Illustrations of Tilling and Weaving wallpaper as a springboard to decode the Qing Dynasty's scientific, technological, and cultural achievements embedded within these artworks—offering a novel perspective on reconstructing historical knowledge through the lens of export art.

🎤 Keynote Topic
“In Search of Chinese Rooms: Reconstructing the Knowledge System through Export Art”

✨ Key Highlights
Grounded in over two decades of international research on wallpapers depicting scenes from the Illustrations of Tilling and Weaving, Prof. Zhao will share how his field studies across European collections evolved into an in-depth investigation of the "Chinese Rooms" phenomenon. Join us as he illuminates China's remarkable achievements in science, technology, and culture during the 18th and 19th centuries!

👤 Keynote Speaker
Prof. ZHAO Feng (Qiushi Distinguished Professor, Zhejiang University and Professor at the School of Art and Archaeology)

🗓️ Stay tuned for more symposium details and registration information coming soon!

【清代廣州,為什麼遠洋大船難以直抵城邊碼頭?🚢Why did large ocean-going ships in Guangzhou during the Qing Dynasty find it difficult to reach the city’s docks directly? ⚓】

Why did ships traveling halfway across the globe get banned from docking upon reaching Guangzhou?⚓👇
Due to the “single-port trade” policy and the regulations of Huangpu Anchorage, foreign ships were required to anchor at Huangpu and were not allowed to sail up to the city. Foreign vessels were required to queue on the outer river, and all goods and passengers were transported into the city in batches by small, agile sampans, like a relay race.
👀This 18th-century painting of Guangzhou (Gentiloni Painting: Canton, late 18th century) captures this moment: the city’s towers and streets are arranged in a harmonious and orderly fashion, while large, medium, and small ships are scattered across the river outside, continuously bringing goods from around the world into the city.

Wanted to learn about Hong Kong's maritime culture, so we followed the “trail” led by the 19th-century Chinese junk "Keying" all the way to … Hong Kong Maritime Museum 📜

About the Chinese junk "Keying" - the ship's name came from Keying, a Manchu statesman in Qing China. The junk ⛵️ left Hong Kong in December 1846, sailed around the Cape of Good Hope to America and then to Britain. She was the first Chinese sailing junk to reach New York.🌏

Sadly, the “Keying” never returned to China. However, a ship model is showcased at C Deck of HKMM. Want to see "Keying” yourself? Come see her story in person! 👀There are plenty more treasures from our collection waiting for you to discover too! ✨
