As a cultural institution, we are dedicated to showcasing and preserving the maritime heritage and contemporary marine environment of Hong Kong and the South China Sea. Here you will see how China, Asia and the West have contributed through the ages to the development of boats, ships, maritime exploration and trade, and naval warfare. While the Museum concentrates on the South China coast and its adjacent seas, it also covers global trends and provides a comprehensive account of Hong Kong's growth and development as a major world port and top maritime centre. The Hong Kong Maritime Museum is a non-profit educational institution funded by Hong Kong's international shipping community.

【2026中國外銷藝術國際研討會圓滿結束🎉2026 International Symposium on Chinese Export Art Concluded Successfully】由香港海事博物館與香港城市大學中文及歷史學系聯合主辦、陳淑貞慈善基金會贊助的「2026中國外銷藝術國際研討會」，於10月13日圓滿結束。為期兩日的研討會吸引了來自12個國家和地區的大學、博物館、文化機構及獨立研究組織超過 300名與會者，反映了國際社會對中國外銷藝術研究日益增長的興趣。✨

作為中西文化交匯之地，香港為相關學術對話提供理想平台。今次研討會就匯聚了逾40位國際知名學者、新晉學者、博物館領導層、策展人、研究員及文化工作者，就中國外銷藝術交流意見並分享最新研究成果。透過主題演講、專題討論及交流活動，與會者探討了中國外銷藝術的全球影響力，以及其在塑造亞洲乃至其他地區的藝術、商業和文化交流中所扮演的角色。🌏

The “2026 International Symposium on Chinese Export Art,” co-organised by the Hong Kong Maritime Museum (HKMM) and the Department of Chinese and History at the City University of Hong Kong, concluded successfully on October 13. Sponsored by the Susan Chen Foundation, the two-day event attracted more than 300 participants from universities, museums, cultural institutions and independent research organisations across 12 countries and regions, reflecting growing international interest in the study of Chinese export art. ✨

Inspired by Hong Kong's unique role as a cultural bridge between East and West, the symposium convened over 40 internationally renowned and emerging scholars, museum leaders, curators, researchers and cultural practitioners to exchange ideas and share their latest research on Chinese export art. Through keynote addresses, panel discussions and networking sessions, participants explored the global significance of Chinese export art and its role in shaping artistic, commercial and cultural exchanges across Asia and beyond. 🌏

【海洋垃圾冷知識 🤔 Ocean Fun Fact: Where Does Marine Litter Really Come From? 】你以為香港海灘上的垃圾大多來自其他地方？其實並不一定！

🌊根據講者淨灘經驗發現，香港海灣水域及海岸近九成海洋垃圾源自香港本地。而在部分外海及偏遠海岸，亦可能發現來自中國、越南、泰國、馬來西亞、菲律賓、日本及韓國等地的漂流垃圾。

海流和風向會把垃圾帶到不同地方，海洋沒有界線，因此海洋垃圾從來都不是某一個地方的問題，而是全球共同面對的挑戰。😞

Many people assume that most of the litter found on Hong Kong's beaches comes from elsewhere. But reality may surprise you.

🌊 According to the speaker's beach-cleaning experience, nearly 90% of the marine litter found along Hong Kong's shelter waters and coastlines originates locally. In other coastal areas, debris can come from a wide range of places, including China, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Japan, and South Korea, depending on ocean currents and wind patterns.

The ocean has no borders. A piece of litter discarded in one place can travel hundreds or even thousands of kilometers before washing ashore somewhere else.

Marine litter is not just one city's problem. It is a global challenge that requires awareness, cooperation, and action from all of us. 😞

A sextant is a traditional nautical instrument used to measure the angle between a celestial body and the horizon, helping sailors determine their position at sea. Director & Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and the Assistant Director of the Marine Department will introduce the history and purpose of the sextant and guide participants step by step in how to use it for celestial navigation. Participants will have the opportunity to assemble their own sextant and, under the guidance of an instructor, learn how to use it for celestial navigation. (A materials fee of HK$100 is payable by each participant.) 🧭 🌊

Please scan the QR code on the poster to register. Once you have completed the registration process, you will receive payment details for the event within three working days. Please follow the instructions in the email to make payment by the deadline to confirm your booking.

The oceans are one of the Earth's largest reservoirs of excess heat, and have been estimated to have absorbed excess energy equivalent to at least one nuclear bomb explosion per second since the beginning of the industrial period.
In this talk we will examine the physical, chemical, biological, ecological and societal impacts of such a warming, the science behind the warming, outline what kind of things help us make those statements about warming, and some things that might be able to help us control that warming. 🌊

Supported by the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and the Hong Kong Shipowners Association, the STEM x Marine Vehicle Design and Construction Competition 2026-2027 is now open for registration! Students will have the opportunity to combine creativity with technology through interactive workshops and hands-on activities, exploring the principles of marine engineering, hydrodynamics, and vehicle design while building and testing their own marine vehicles.

We were delighted to welcome students from Hong Kong Metropolitan University Li Ka Shing School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKMU LiPACE) to the Hong Kong Maritime Museum recently! 🎉

During their visit, the students participated in a tailored program: 🌊Guided Tour of the Marine Science Gallery: Gaining deeper insights into marine ecosystems and scientific knowledge. 🗣️ Thematic Talk: A session led by our experts, focusing on the Marine Ecology and Conservation.

We are so glad to have had the opportunity to share our passion for marine science, conservation, and education with these passionate students ! We hope this visit inspires a lifelong love and a sense of responsibility for our oceans. 💙

The museum also offers the “Plankton Workshop in Victoria Harbour,” where participants can conduct field studies and explore the fascinating marine micro-ecosystem of Victoria Harbour. 【為什麼圖中如此熱鬧呢？像整座城在水上開Party? ✨ 🚢 Why is the scene in the painting so lively? It's like the whole city is having a party on the water!】雖然已入十月，秋意未濃，天氣依然炎熱。大家是否也想趁著這股餘熱，約上三五知己，來一場本年度最後的船河 Party？

再看看這幅圖，是不是像極了整座城市正在水上狂歡？🚢其實畫中描繪的是嶺南水鄉端午賽龍舟的場景，是清代廣東的外銷畫。🐲仔細看，河道兩岸是掛著招牌的樓房與茶樓，拱橋上，窗邊，廊下都擠滿看熱鬧的人，水面龍舟貼水飛馳，旗幟、鼓手、舵手各司其職，小船穿梭其間——這既是節日，也是整座城市的集體狂歡, 畫家把這種歡騰的節慶氣氛一筆筆呈現出來，讓人彷彿聽見鼓聲與人潮的喧囂。🌟

Although October is already here, the autumn chill has yet to set in, and the weather remains warm. Are you thinking of taking advantage of this heat to gather a few good friends for one last boat party of the year?

Take a look at this painting—doesn’t it look like the entire city is celebrating on the water? 🚢 This is because the painting depicts a dragon boat race in a Lingnan water town during the Dragon Boat Festival. 🐲 It’s an export painting from Guangdong during the Qing Dynasty. Look closely: the riverbanks are lined with buildings and teahouses with signs; the arched bridges, windowsills, and corridors are all crowded with onlookers. Dragon boats skim across the water, flag bearers, drummers, and helmsmen each fulfilling their duties, while smaller boats weave through the crowds—this is not only a festival but also a collective celebration for the entire city. The painter has vividly captured this festive atmosphere, making the viewer almost hear the drumbeats and the clamor of the crowds. 🌟
