In our daily lives, we often enjoy oysters or use products made from them. But how many of us know that oyster shells, the most overlooked part of an oyster, can be upcycled? Through nature-based solutions, they can help enhance biodiversity and ecological value along artificial coastlines.

The Hong Kong Maritime Museum is delighted to collaborate with Dr. Chi Chiu Lo from the Hong Kong Metropolitan University and his team to share insights on oyster shells and the findings from their Eco- shoreline experiments. Participants can also build a home for marine life using oyster shells with your own hands during the workshop.

🌊 In this activity, you will:
✨ Learn from experts about the outcomes of Eco- shoreline experiments
✨ Experience how food waste can be transformed into valuable resources by creating marine habitats with oyster shells
Let’s work together to give overlooked oyster shells a new purpose in protecting our oceans!

【沒有冷氣的香港,你能想像嗎?☀️ Can You Imagine Hong Kong Without Air Conditioning?】

With temperatures skyrocketing in Hong Kong over the past few weeks, stepping outside feels like melting! When the heat becomes unbearable, most of us probably crave ice-cold drinks or retreat into air-conditioned rooms. ☀️

But have you ever wondered how the older generations in Hong Kong beat the heat before the era of air conditioning? 🥵 While browsing through this 1868 painting showcasing shops at 60 Queen's Road, we noticed a detail: almost everyone in the painting is holding a hand fan to cool themselves down.

In the old days in Hong Kong, without air conditioning or electric fans, people relied on a simple hand fan, maybe a bowl of herbal tea, and a good dose of patience to endure Hong Kong's long, scorching summers. Compared to nowadays, where a blast of mall AC is just a few steps away, it’s truly hard to imagine how they braved that sweltering heat!

Whispers of the Aqua Marina 】

We proudly present Ms. Elsa Shao as our young ambassador in the marine science education programme. As a keen high schooler who loves marine biology and art, Elsa has created with us an artful social media series, Whispers of the Aqua Marina (碧藍低語) that weaves ocean science with her passionate personal stories through her original illustration and narratives in an informative and inspirational way! 🎨✍

(New pieces will be released monthly on our social media.)

Protection does not start from action; it starts first from understanding the “whispers” of our deep blue ocean. This series, Whispers of the Aqua Marina (碧藍低語), introduces you to the 7 Principles of Ocean Literacy by UNESCO, where we learn about well-rounded guidelines that truly allow you to acknowledge what the ocean is and needs, and to re-discover our connection with the ocean. Humans are part of nature. 🌍

📢 Join us to transform your actions from the roots and protect our ocean together.
