《糖不甩 Childtopia》 by Sinje Lee
From 2001 to 2007, I lived in Hong Kong.
This was a very important and profound journey in my life.
Growing up watching Hong Kong films and then participating in their productions created an incredible connection for me. I lived on this land for seven years, learned to speak Cantonese, made countless close friends, enjoyed meals at corner tea houses, and ate boat congee at "Congee Wonderland" in Wan Chai. For my roles, I took an hour-long subway ride to learn the violin, stood by the roadside in Causeway Bay listening to the trees, counted the "tap tap tap" of machines crossing the sidewalk, rode a bicycle on Lamma Island, and in winter bought a steaming bowl of fried sticky rice from a street stall.
These everyday moments of happiness have left their mark on my time in Hong Kong.
After leaving Hong Kong for 18 years, I returned here with my own works.
I named my piece "Glutinous Rice Balls" because it is a well-known dessert in Hong Kong, consisting of round glutinous rice balls, much like the round faces in this series.
The surface of the rice balls is coated with a sticky peanut powder that cannot be washed away, symbolizing the innocence that forever resides in our hearts. That invaluable "innocence" is both an original intention and a pure land deep within our hearts.
Through the "Glutinous Rice Balls" series, I wish to offer a sincere love, reminiscent of childhood innocence, to Hong Kong.
