Novalis Art Design was founded in 2012 with the aim of pushing the boundaries of art and design in Hong Kong. From the start the Novalis principle was that art and design deserves the same level of respect and appreciation, thus the gallery places equal focus on both art and design with gallery programming. Novalis Art Design started out with showcasing the Memphis Group, the famous Italian design

movement founded by Ettore Sottsass in 1981 which defined ‘80s aesthetic and revolutionised the design world as it expanded the boundaries of design by emphasizing the expressive possibilities of design as a vehicle of communication, rather than just one of utilitarian function. Since then, Novalis Art Design has expanded the design program to showcase new design with a conceptual focus. With art, Novalis Art Design adopts a similar approach, placing importance on the conceptual. Whether with art or design, what matters is the concept behind the work, no matter the medium. Novalis Art Design continues to strive to provide a platform for integrating art and design in the true sense, through experimentation and sparking new dialogues between the disciplines of art, design and beyond. The gallery sees that more could be done in terms of design education and thus will be aiming to drive dialogues of design and the interplay between art and design. Novalis Art Design has had the pleasure to participate in art and design loans and events in major museums around the world: MoMA N.Y., Victoria and Albert Museum London, Triennale di Milano, Louvre in Paris, Wolfsonian Museum Miami, Istituto di Cultura Italiana Los Angeles, Shanghai Himalayas Museum in China, and most recently, M+ Museum in Hong Kong.

Novalis Art Design is pleased to present "Next of Kin," an exhibition exploring the evocative designs of Monica Taverniti. The exhibition is supported by the Consulate General of Italy in Hong Kong and the Italian Cultural Institute in Hong Kong.

This exhibition features a collection of her unique creations, where functional objects transcend their purpose and become storytellers. Taverniti's pieces, often resembling miniature buildings or enigmatic structures, invite viewers to imagine the narratives they hold. The exhibition highlights her process of transforming everyday materials such as water- based enamels and acrylics, markers, and a two-component transparent finish, into objects imbued with personality and history, blurring the boundaries between art, design, and storytelling. "Next of Kin" offers a captivating look into Taverniti's world, where design sparks imagination and invites personal interpretation.

Novalis Art Design is pleased to present "PHYSIS GLITCH - Reclaiming the Ineffable," an exhibition by Italian artist Roberto Davolio, supported by the Consulate General of Italy in Hong Kong and the Italian Cultural Institute in Hong Kong. Curated by Federica Viola, this exhibition explores the intersection of technology and artistic sensitivity, challenging our perception of reality in the digital age.

Davolio's captivating images, infused with vibrant colors and geometric forms, invite viewers to engage all their senses. He uses an innovative device, "Hermes," to interact directly with the camera's lens, projecting colors and shapes onto the subject. This process disrupts pre-programmed algorithms, creating unforeseen visual possibilities and revealing hidden dimensions of reality. The resulting photographs are not mere representations but reinterpretations, prompting contemplation and a deeper understanding of our connection to the world around us.

"PHYSIS GLITCH" draws inspiration from Eastern artistic traditions, emphasizing contemplation, emptiness, and harmony. Davolio's work resonates with the viewer on an emotional and spiritual level, inviting intuition to transcend the limits of rationality. In a world saturated with digitally manipulated images, Davolio's work offers a unique perspective, questioning how we perceive reality and how technology can be used to expand, rather than distort, our understanding. Join us for this thought-provoking exhibition and experience a new vision of the real.
