The Virgin

Γλυπτό του Γρηγόρη Κουσκουρή – Μάρμαρο Τήνου

Το The Virgin γεννήθηκε από ένα κομμάτι μάρμαρο που δεν προοριζόταν ποτέ να γίνει έργο τέχνης. Ένα παλιό, ξεχασμένο ρετάλι στα εγκαταλελειμμένα λατομεία της Τήνου· ένας λίθος που έμοιαζε να «περιμένει» χιλιάδες χρόνια να τον ανακαλύψει το κατάλληλο χέρι.

Ο Γρηγόρης Κουσκουρής ταξιδεύει συχνά στο νησί, αναζητώντας στις σκιερές χαράδρες των παλιών λατομείων μικρά θραύσματα που συνδέονται άμεσα με τη μνήμη και την ιστορία της μαρμαροτεχνίας. Δεν αναζητά το τέλειο κομμάτι—αναζητά το κομμάτι που του μιλά. Εκείνο που κουβαλά ατέλειες, ίχνη χρόνου, μια εσωτερική ενέργεια που μπορεί να μετατραπεί σε γλυπτική μορφή.

Στο συγκεκριμένο ρετάλι είδε την ιδέα της γέννησης. Τη λεπτή, προστατευτική κοιλότητα· την αντίθεση ανάμεσα στο τραχύ εξωτερικό και το σχεδόν ιερό λευκό εσωτερικό του Τηνιακού μαρμάρου. Η μορφή ανοίγεται σαν φυσικό κοχύλι, σαν μια απαλή αγκαλιά φωτός, και στο εσωτερικό της συναντά κανείς ένα λεπτό, σκοτεινό στοιχείο που λειτουργεί σαν νοητή ραχοκοκαλιά, σαν μυστικό σύμβολο που φυλάσσεται μέσα στη σιωπή του μαρμάρου.

Το The Virgin είναι ένα έργο που μιλάει για την καταγωγή, την καθαρότητα και τον πυρήνα των πραγμάτων—όχι μέσα από επιτήδευση, αλλά μέσα από την αλήθεια της ύλης. Ένα γλυπτό όπου το άγριο και το τρυφερό συνυπάρχουν, όπου η πέτρα δεν διαμορφώνεται απλώς, αλλά αποκαλύπτεται.

Palindrome —

Its semi-circular, radiating form stands as a silent architectural statement — a moment suspended between past and future.
The strictness of geometry merges with the living texture of marble, revealing the invisible tension of the stone and the artist’s deliberate gesture.

Το Palindrome είναι μια γλυπτική διερεύνηση του χρόνου, της επανάληψης και της έννοιας του απείρου.
Η ημικυκλική, ακτινωτή του μορφή στέκεται ως μια σιωπηλή αρχιτεκτονική δήλωση — μια στιγμή αιωρούμενη ανάμεσα στο παρελθόν και το μέλλον.
Η αυστηρότητα της γεωμετρίας συναντά τη ζωντανή υφή του μαρμάρου, αποκαλύπτοντας την αόρατη ένταση της πέτρας και τη συνειδητή χειρονομία του καλλιτέχνη.

Πρόκειται για ένα μοναδικό έργο που δεν καταλαμβάνει απλώς τον χώρο — τον ορίζει.

Two bird-like forms, carved from a single mass of marble, meet in a quiet, poetic dialogue. The fluid lines, the natural veins of the stone, and the finely balanced volumes create a sense of movement that seems to breathe within the silence.

The Virgin

Sculpture by Grigoris Kouskouris – Tinos Marble

The Virgin was born from a piece of marble that was never meant to become art. A discarded fragment lying forgotten in the abandoned quarries of Tinos—stone that seemed to have waited for centuries for the right hands to find it.

Grigoris Kouskouris often travels to the island, searching through the hidden passages of old quarries for remnants carrying memory and quiet power. He does not seek the perfect block; he seeks the piece that speaks to him—the fragment marked by time, shaped by nature, and holding an inner tension that invites transformation.

In this particular remnant, he saw the idea of birth. A delicate, protective cavity; the contrast between the rough, earthy exterior and the sacred whiteness of Tinos marble within. The form opens like a natural shell, a gentle cradle of light. Inside, a narrow, dark element appears—an abstract spine, a symbolic thread, a secret held within the marble’s silence.

The Virgin speaks of origins, purity, and the essence of form—not through ornament, but through the truth of the material itself. It is a sculpture where the raw and the tender coexist, where the stone is not simply carved but revealed.
