🏺 Be part of "Fragments and Futures: Contemporary Encounters with Ancient Worlds", Art Space Pythagorion's new exhibition, bringing together 10 international artists who explore the myths, materials, and visual languages of classical archaeology through painting, sculpture, installation, performance, and digital media. Curated by Katerina Gregos & Ioli Tzanetaki.

💫 Supported by the Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Samos and Ikaria, the exhibition celebrated 100 years of Deutsches Archäologisches Institut Athen research and revealed Samos as a meeting point between Europe, Asia and Africa.

🏛️ From Wooden Idols to Monumental Temples – The Heraion of Samos!
Ancient sources tell us that the first cult statue of Hera in Samos was a simple wooden figure. By the 7th c. BCE, the first human-shaped statue marked the construction of the earliest Heraion temple.

🏴‍☠️ Legends speak of Admete, the priestess who saved the goddess’ statue from pirates, and the annual rituals known as the Toneia and Heraia celebrated Hera’s divine role through athletic contests and sacred ceremonies.

✨ By 575 BCE, the Dipteros I arose: a monumental temple with 132 limestone columns, almost 13 m high each, showcasing the innovation of Samian architects Roikos and Theodoros. Its successor, Dipteros II, built under the tyrant Polykrates, reached nearly 20 m per column and remains the largest temple ever constructed in Greece.

Οι αρχαίες πηγές αναφέρουν ότι το πρώτο λατρευτικό είδωλο της Ήρας στη Σάμο ήταν ξύλινο. Τον 7ο αι. π.Χ., το πρώτο ανθρωπόμορφο άγαλμα σήμανε την ανέγερση του πρώτου ναού. 🏛️

Ο μύθος της Αδμήτης, που σώζει το άγαλμα από πειρατές, και οι τελετές Toneia και Heraia αναδεικνύουν τον ρόλο της Ήρας μέσα από αθλητικούς αγώνες και ιερά δρώμενα.

✨ Γύρω στο 575 π.Χ., ο Δίπτερος Ι υψώθηκε με 132 ασβεστολιθικούς κίονες ύψους ~13 μ., δείχνοντας την τεχνολογική καινοτομία των Σαμίων αρχιτεκτόνων Ροίκου και Θεόδωρου. Ο διάδοχός του, Δίπτερος ΙΙ, υπό τον τύραννο Πολυκράτη, έφτασε σε ύψος κίονα ~20 μ., καθιστώντας τον μεγαλύτερο ναό που χτίστηκε ποτέ στην Ελλάδα.

This exhibition marks the 100th anniversary of Deutsches Archäologisches Institut Athen’s excavations on Samos and offers a unique opportunity to view the results of this long-term research project in a new light.

Echoes of Egypt 🇪🇬 in Early Greece🇬🇷

The Greeks were fascinated by Egypt: its monumental architecture, scientific knowledge, and its long, continuous history that reached back millennia. From the 8th century BC, Eastern Greeks worked in Egypt as mercenaries 🛡️ and traders🚢 , especially in ports like Naukratis, a major hub where cultures came into close contact🤝.

Temples, sculptures, measurement systems, and even cult practices in Greece began to reflect Egyptian influence. But these were not simple imitations - the Greeks adapted what they saw to suit their own cultural needs 🏛️.

The wooden figurine in this image, inspired by the Egyptian deity Bes, shows how Greek worshippers began dedicating “Egyptianizing” objects to Hera. Bes, a protector of childhood and joy, inspired the creation of similar figures in Greece ✨.

Ηχώ της Αιγύπτου 🇪🇬 στην Αρχαία Ελλάδα 🇬🇷

Οι Έλληνες γοητεύτηκαν από την Αίγυπτο με την μεγαλοπρέπεια της αρχιτεκτονικής της, τις επιστημονικές της γνώσεις και την πανάρχαια ιστορία της, που εκτεινόταν ήδη για χιλιετίες. Από τον 8ο αιώνα π.Χ., Έλληνες από τα ανατολικά νησιά εργάζονταν στην Αίγυπτο ως μισθοφόροι 🛡️ και έμποροι 🚢, με επίκεντρο τη Ναύκρατη, ένα εμπορικό λιμάνι και σημαντικό σταυροδρόμι πολιτισμικής συνύπαρξης 🤝.

Ναοί, γλυπτά, το μετρικό συστήμα και ακόμη και λατρευτικές πρακτικές στην Ελλάδα άρχισαν να επηρεάζονται από την Αίγυπτο. Όμως αυτές δεν ήταν απλές αντιγραφές αλλά προσαρμόστηκαν στις ελληνικές πολιτιστικές ανάγκες🏛️.

Το ξύλινο ειδώλιο της εικόνας, εμπνευσμένο από την αιγυπτιακή θεότητα Bes, δείχνει πώς οι Σάμιοι άρχισαν να αφιερώνουν αγυπτιακού τύπου αντικείμενα στην ‘Ηρα. Ο Bes, προστάτης της οικογενειακής ευτυχίας, ενέπνευσε τη δημιουργία παρόμοιων τεχνουργημάτων στην Ελλάδα.✨

Wealth, Honour & Knowledge in Early Greece 🏺

How did ancient elites secure power?
In early Greek societies, social status was earned and flaunted through wealth💰, warrior honour⚔️, and intellectual prestige📖.

From banquets🍷, estates, and battle spoils to piracy, mercenary service, and long-distance trade⛵, elite Greeks pursued success by any means.🌍

They built networks of gift exchange and hospitality, sailed far for profit, and travelled East to gain knowledge in various fields, like science, medicine, and governance.📚

Πώς εξασφάλιζαν την εξουσία οι αρχαίοι Έλληνες;
Στις πρώιμες κοινωνίες, το κύρος βασιζόταν στον πλούτο💰, την πολεμική τιμή⚔️ και την πνευματική καλλιέργεια📖.

Από συμπόσια🍷, κτήματα και λάφυρα πολέμου, μέχρι πειρατεία, μισθοφορική δράση και εμπόριο σε μακρινές περιοχές ⛵: Oι ελίτ κυνηγούσαν την επιτυχία με κάθε τρόπο.🌍

Δημιουργούσαν δίκτυα φιλοξενίας και ανταλλαγής δώρων, ταξίδευαν για εμπορικά κέρδη και αναζητούσαν γνώση στην Ανατολή, σε τομείς όπως η επιστήμη, η ιατρική και η διοίκηση.📚

Banquets and Power in the East 🍷

This Assyrian relief (645–635 BC) from the North Palace of Nineveh captures a royal banquet: King Ashurbanipal reclines with a bowl in hand, while the queen is seated beside him.👑

Such Eastern customs of elite drinking inspired the Greek symposia of later centuries. Similar vessels have even been found at the Heraion of Samos. 🏺

Συμπόσια και εξουσία στην Ανατολή 🍷

Αυτό το ανάγλυφο από το Βόρειο Ανάκτορο της Νινευή (645–635 π.Χ.) απεικονίζει βασιλικό συμπόσιο: ο Μεγάλος Βασιλιάς Ασσουρμπανιπάλ ανακλίνεται κρατώντας κύπελλο, ενώ η βασίλισσα κάθεται δίπλα του.👑

Αντίστοιχα έθιμα οινοποσίας των ανατολικών ελίτ ενέπνευσαν αργότερα τα ελληνικά συμπόσια. Παρόμοια αγγεία έχουν βρεθεί και στο Ηραίο της Σάμου. 🏺

Elite Warriors at the Heraion✨

Τwo striking finds from the Heraion of Samos:
• A helmet-shaped head of a vessel for libations (7th c. BC)
• A bronze statuette of a Samian hoplite (6th c. BC)
These objects capture the image of the idealized elite warrior in the Archaic period.⚔️ 🛡️

They reveal how power, status, and religious practice were deeply connected in the society of ancient Samos.🏺
