At first glance, this colorful gem might look like a piece of modern art. In reality, it's thomsonite—a rare member of the zeolite mineral group known for its striking concentric patterns and radiating crystal structures.

Many of the finest examples come from the shores of Lake Superior, where rounded nodules are shaped by nature and later polished to reveal their distinctive "eye-like" patterns. The mineral's intricate bands and bursts of color have made it a favorite among collectors and lapidary enthusiasts.

Named after Scottish chemist and mineralogist Thomas Thomson, thomsonite is a reminder that some of nature's most fascinating treasures aren't always the most famous gemstones.

Λίγες ώρες έμειναν για την έναρξη του 7ου Φεστιβάλ Λεσβιακής Γαστρονομίας Lesvos Food Fest !

Ξεκινάμε αύριο, Πέμπτη 9 Ιουλίου, στην Αγία Παρασκευή.
Θα σας περιμένουμε, στις 19:30, στον αύλειο χώρο του Μουσείου Βιομηχανικής Ελαιουργίας Λέσβου, όπου θα φιλοξενηθεί η δράση «Άρωμα πόλης» – Η Λωξάντρα συναντά το Νόστιμον Ήμαρ.

Ο σεφ Αλέξανδρος Παπανδρέου, η Ελπίδα Κουμαρέλα και ο Αγροτουριστικός Συνεταιρισμός Αγίας Παρασκευής «Η Σελάδα» μας ταξιδεύουν στο δικό τους «Νόστιμον ήμαρ». Μυρωδιές από ανέμελα καλοκαίρια στο χωριό ζωντανεύουν στον προαύλιο χώρο του Μουσείου. Η κουβέντα ανατρέπεται, όταν εισβάλλει η οικοδέσποινα, μια εμβληματική φιγούρα της Πολίτικης κουζίνας. Οι συνταγές της παντρεύουν την αρχοντιά με τα μερακλίδικα υλικά της Πόλης. Σήμερα, πάμε εκεί που οι λέξεις είναι γλυκιές σαν πολίτικος χαλβάς και οι αναμνήσεις καίνε σαν το μπούκοβο. Θα θυμηθούμε πως η μαγειρική είναι σαν τον έρωτα: αν δεν βάλεις μεράκι, το φαΐ θα βγει άνοστο, κι αν δεν βάλεις αγάπη, η ζωή θα βγει… τζούφια.

We look forward to welcoming you at 7:30 p.m. in the courtyard of the Museum of Industrial Olive Oil Production of Lesvos, where the event "Aroma of the City" – Loxandra Meets Nostimon Imar will take place.

Join us for an evening celebrating the rich culinary heritage and flavors of Lesvos!

Chef Alexandros Papandreou, Elpida Koumarela, and the Agia Paraskevi Agritourism Cooperative “I Selada” invite us on a journey to their own Nostimon Imar (“the day of homecoming”). The aromas of carefree village summers come alive in the museum’s courtyard. The story takes an unexpected turn when the hostess arrives—an iconic figure of Constantinopolitan cuisine. Her recipes blend elegance with the rich, authentic ingredients of the City. Tonight, we travel to a place where words are as sweet as traditional Constantinopolitan halva and memories burn as intensely as red pepper flakes. We are reminded that cooking is like love: without passion, food lacks flavor; without love, life itself feels empty.

Ruby, the birthstone for July, has captivated civilizations for thousands of years. Its name comes from the Latin ruber, meaning “red”. The finest rubies display an vivid red hue often described in the trade as “pigeon’s blood.” “Pigeon’s blood” rubies also strongly fluoresce red under ultraviolet light, which contributes to their intense appearance in daylight.

Many of history’s most celebrated rubies trace their origins to Myanmar (formerly Burma), while other important sources today include Mozambique, Madagascar and Thailand. Known in Sanskrit as ratnaraj, or “king of precious gems,” it symbolizes love, courage and vitality and remains one of the most valuable colored stones today.

Standing over five feet tall and weighing over 200 kilograms, the Vix Krater is the largest metal vessel to survive from Western antiquity. Discovered in 1953 within the tomb of the "Lady of Vix" near Burgundy, France, this monumental bronze wine-mixing container dates to the 6th century BCE. Greek craftsmen produced the krater, which features a frieze of armed warriors and chariots around its neck, while a volute handle rises from each side. The vessel's sheer size and Greek iconography, found in a Celtic chieftain's burial, reveal the cultural exchange between the two civilizations. This object, along with gold jewelry and imported pottery, accompanied a high-status woman into the afterlife. The krater now resides in the Musée du Pays Châtillonnais, a physical testament to ancient trade routes and aristocratic power.
