Mati Santorini

Mati Santorini An art observatory in Santorini, Greece that investigates the human condition through the prisms of regional identitiy and contemporary art.

Mati Art Gallery in Fira is the main venue where visual artist Yorgos Kypris displays his work. It was established in 1990 in Santorini, an island in constant motion, shaped and changed by the forces of nature and social interactions. Within the framework of a society which is influenced by universal and local dynamics, Mati Art Gallery is committed to following the developments, while it remains faithful to its values, as an exponent of fine taste and contemporary perceptions about art.

In the context of RESONANCE, our 2026 public program, we have the honour to host artist for a 2-week artistic residency.

William XO was invited as our first artist in residency as his work is deeply enmeshed with the locality of the natural environments that he creates it in. In Santorini, this dialogue between disciplines will continue through the development of his upcoming album Oneiros, alongside a new series of paintings responding to the island’s topography and environment.

His creative energy will constantly shift between sound, painting, and the natural environment. In the artist's own words:

""My work moves between sound and image, seeking to dissolve the boundaries between what we hear and what we see.

During a recent music residency in the northern wilderness of Ibiza, I created my EP MY EMOTIONS (released April
10). The songs were born from open skies, salt air, and endless Mediterranean light. Immersed in nature, I spent my days outdoors, writing music and painting simultaneously, allowing each medium to nourish the other. Sound influenced color; color shaped rhythm.""

William will be back in September to share his work with the community in MATI Mesaria. More information will flow soon!

Thank you very much to our collaborators for the support. This project could not happen without you! Follow their pages and support local businesses!

ANNOUNCEMENT: RESONANCE (public program 2026)

Under the theme "RESONANCE", Mati Mesaria explores artistic practices as a vessel for reconnection with the land, uniting community, and the regeneration of social and ecological relationships. Through the lens of contemporary art, we tackle contemporary problems of daily life on the island and beyond. Through our practice, we fight fast-paced tourism and its pressures on the land, and we bridge the gap between humans and nature. Seeking to resonate with our natural environment and speak through the senses, we embrace slowness and mindfulness in our creativity.

From June to October, a series of events, workshops, and creative initiatives will unfold as part of this living program: yoga sessions, mindfulness practices, art workshops, singing circles, dance gatherings, and an artist residency. Each activity is designed as an invitation to slow down, reconnect, and engage more deeply with place, body, and community.

Check our calendar and save the dates. It is time to slow down and resonate.

Is speargun fishing an activity you’re familiar with? In the context of the creation of one of his most well-known works, Entrapped Fish, Yorgos Kypris shared with us his personal experience with the “sport,” the moment that led him to stop, and the inspiration behind this iconic work.

This is your reminder that artistic creation is not a perfect journey. This work-ing-progress video is a bit different: it starts with a problem. A large-scale work did not develop how the team expected it. So, they got to work! Yorgos Kypris and his team came up with inspired solutions and adapted their original vision to create a truly special piece. Do you like how it turned out??

Wine and art have long been intertwined, both shaping and reflecting human experience, accompanying celebrations, introspections, shared conversations, elevating them into something memorable, something felt.

In partnership with winery, we offer a unique wine tasting experience together with an art tour that invites you into the world of Yorgos Kypris through Confession, a retrospective spanning four decades of his career. By merging wine and art, we invite our guests into a space where tradition and creativity unite, transforming the act of seeing and tasting into an act of feeling.

Art has shaped Santorini for millennia, from the vibrant frescoes of ancient Akrotiri to the island’s distinctive architecture and deep artistic traditions. At MATI in Mesaria, we honor this legacy by transforming a historic winery into a contemporary cultural space; one that bridges art, history, and a more intimate, thought-provoking experience of the island.

Our art tour invites you into the world of Yorgos Kypris through Confession, a retrospective spanning four decades of his career.
