Revisiting VUOTO - an artist’ book / luxury magazine published by Alison Jones and Milly Thompson (2012)

VUOTO, (Italian – empty: vuòto) comprises projects by Alison Jones, Josephine Meckseper, Martha Rosler, Milly Thompson, Nicole Wermers and an ‘editorial’ by Nina Power, and was conceived as simultaneously a high-end self advertisement, and an examination of the conditions of art through feminism, distinction, luxury and glamour.

Alison Jones’ project in VUOTO is a feature on private collections titled ARTHOUSE. The text is a collage of journalism taken from the Art and Culture sections of magazines and is paired with the artist’s ink paintings of art in luxury homes.
Our current artist in residence at Cynefin Athens, Alison Jones, is developing new work and revisiting pre-existing ones, in dialogue with with Cypriot artist Maria Toumazou.

Alison Jones' solo exhibition opens May 30th.

Cynefin Athens is delighted to announce current artist in residence, Alison Jones, in dialogue with Cypriot artist Maria Toumazou. Their dialogue will culminate in a solo presentation of Jones’ work at Cynefin Athens in April 2026, dates to be announced soon.

Alison Jones is a painter of art and luxury, fashion and class, and the condition Bourdieu describes as ‘Distinction’. Reveling in painting’s ideological muddledness, and taking pleasure in its guilty status as luxury art object par excellence, her paintings pose in the slippery space between desire and critique. Self-described as “institutional critique in f**k-me shoes”, Jones works with the entanglement of the female gaze in depictions of dressing up and showing off that draw attention to, but also willfully confuse a commentary on femininity and spectatorship.

As well as painting, Alison Jones has made books, posters, performances and curated exhibitions most notably in collaborations with the late Milly Thompson, which erupted between 2010 - 2016 for periodic thoughts on, and reassessments of feminism.

Alison Jones & Maria Toumazou

Alison Jones was Lecturer in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London 2008 - 2023 where she met Maria Toumazou, then a student. They talked a lot about the methodology, politics and humour of the artist Martha Rosler. Whilst their practices appear entirely dissimilar, they share an obtuse gaze with the intention of noticing and highlighting "nefarious ideological operations" behind everyday visual culture.

Alison Jones and Maria Toumazou will be collaborating on an open-ended project, which will develop during the time Alison is in residence at Cynefin Athens.

Apotropaia
June 28th – Aug 2nd
Curated by Andreas Mallouris & Neal Rock

Cynefin Athens is pleased to present the group exhibition, Apotropaia, opening on Saturday, June 28th. In; The Q***r Art of Failure, Jack Halberstam explores failure as an epistemic, counter- hegemonic force whose capacity and form gives visibility and meaning to histories, bodies and ways of living that have long been rendered invisible. Ostensibly negative qualities such as emptiness, limitation, ineffectiveness, sterility, and unproductiveness, when twinned with flourishing, joy and boundlessness, give definition to creative practices with roots in q***r and decolonial countercultural histories.

In Athens today, herms no longer mark an urban landscape whose architectural makeup and communities bear the ravages of longstanding socio-economic deprivation. The apotropaic qualities of herms - ancient Athenian city markers - today can be found in the many ways that creative communities reform individual and collective imaginaries. Artist-run gallery spaces are abundant in a city that provides little monetary incentive for artists to equate success with financial remuneration. One form of turning away or refusal – the failure to operate as other cities have articulated capital (London, New York) - provides an opportunity for different forms of flourishing. Whilst the artists in this exhibition are neither a cohesive whole, nor grouped together thematically (another ‘failure’), many have forged the permission to say yes to material and intellectual ways of being that originated in othering, invisibility, the hyper-visual or exoticised. What we encounter are various reformations of the human, not as a coherent form or subject, but rather as mutable, ruptured, potential, imagined or contaminated – the culmination of many moments of joy, failures and refusals along the way.

Antigoni Pasidi's solo show at Cynefin Athens continues this week ( Thurs thru Sat, 4-8pm) and next week. Her second artist talk is this Saturday, June 14th, from 2pm.

The exhibition brings together a series of sculptures, drawings and collages produced during Pasidi's two months in residence at the gallery. The artist further develops an ongoing trajectory of research, exploring support structures, real and symbolic, reflecting her interest in the concept of aesthetic support. Through this most recent iteration, the works borrow from old and new existing structures, manifesting gestures, instances and performances of support. Pictured are works made in response to sites in the Plateia Amerikis neighborhood surrounding Cynefin Athens.
