Ellie Joannou is an artist and designer working at the intersection of furniture and sculpture. Drawing on radical design movements such as Memphis Milano and Gufram, her practice reimagines everyday domestic objects through humour, material play, and subtle provocation.
For her exhibition at George Benias Gallery, Joannou presents a sculptural stool that references the form of a toilet seat, transforming an intimate, utilitarian object into a tactile and lecorative statement. Alongside this work is a floor lamp from which flowers emerge, merging the domestic with the organic in a quietly surreal gesture.
Together, these works challenge conventional ideas of function and taste, proposing furniture as a site of play, discomfort, and transformation
