They say a picture can paint a thousand words. 🎨
In the 1930s Gerald Leslie Brockhurst became one of the most sought after portrait painters. This painting of the socialite Margaret Sweeney, Duchess of Argyll, and ones like it, represented a fashionable blending of past with present, a modern expression of traditional artistic values. We see a combination of rich decoration with moments of character, as the dramatic landscape background of volcanic mountains and loch subtly reveal the sitter’s Scottish heritage, of which she was intensely proud.
For all of its details, one inspiration is hidden in plain sight. Brockhurst was influenced by Leonardo da Vinci after he took a trip to Paris and Italy. This portrait uses many elements similar to those found in Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, from its half-length format, background landscape with a low horizon, and of course its sitter's mysterious smile.
