so brilliant image :) Beneath the Zadar Archaeological Museum in Croatia lies a preserved Roman street, its stone paving marked by a large ph***ic graffito carved in situ. Far from crude vandalism, such symbols—known as fascina—were common in Roman urban landscapes, believed to ward off evil, attract good fortune, and sometimes indicate brothels or significant pathways. Dating from when Zadar was the Roman colony of Iader in Dalmatia, this carving reflects both Roman engineering and spiritual beliefs. Now visible through a glass floor, it offers a rare, authentic glimpse into everyday Roman life and superstition.
