Holgate Windmill

Holgate Windmill Welcome to Holgate Windmill, York’s last surviving windmill and the country’s oldest five‑sailed mill. We’re open year‑round for open days and special events.
(1)

Step inside, watch milling in action (wind permitting), and take home a bag of our flour. Holgate Windmill was built in 1770 and worked until 1933. It has recently been restored by the Holgate Windmill Preservation Society and now produces stoneground flour once again. It is open throughout the year, please see our leaflet or website for details, for you to see the sails turning and see how flour

is produced. Also see our website for details of special events and exhibitions. We are open by arrangement for school parties, and group tours. Please note we have steep ladders and steps which are not accessible for pushchairs and those with restricted mobility. On the 1 bus route along Acomb Road. Get off opposite the Holgate Methodist Church and walk up snicket. On the 10 bus route along Poppleton Road. Walk up Windmill Rise

Remember Windy Miller? Ever wonder how he avoided a fatal collision with his windmill sails, as he nipped in and out the front door?

Fun fact: windmills usually have two doors, one at the front and one at the back, to enable decapitation-free entry and exit, wherever the sails are that day.

Not that our millers have to worry – Holgate windmill was extended by one storey in the 1850s, and the sails easily clear both its doors these days!

Mill merch has got a new look! After hard work clearing the floor downstairs, and a spot of paint retouching, new cabinets were fitted and restocked, with help from our friends at York Cares and Benenden Health. Doesn't it all look smashing?

As part of the three-day AcombFest arts festival, the Mill's three floors will be home to light installations by multi-media artists Ben and Jim Grant.

The first part, ‘Rock’, on the milling floor, will intrigue visitors with a sound piece developed from recordings of the earth's crust moving, with B&W films representing the erosion of land.

One floor up, ‘Soil’ will centre on human experience growing and harvesting grain, while on the top floor 'Sky' will feature a soundscape developed from recordings of bells played through a sculpture made from old wind instruments.

Want to know more? Watch this space for installation updates, and come and experience it for yourself! The Mill will be open 10-4, Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 July. Free entry!
