Welcome Sara Hayward. 💐

We are thrilled to welcome Sara Hayward to York Fine Arts this month. 🥂 Sara Hayward

Sara boldly explores still life, landscape, seascape and figurative subjects through expressive mark-making and a striking approach to colour. Her broad range of work combines recognisable subject matter with a semiabstract visual language.

Expressive yet considered, Sara’s approach moves between observation and abstraction, retaining elements of her chosen subjects while allowing colour, pattern and painterly gesture to shape their interpretation.

A formally trained artist, Sara’s rigorous education has served as a firm foundation for her practice. Following her studies at Bournville School of Art, she attended the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art at the University of Oxford before specialising in printmaking at the Royal College of Art, London. Her training in printmaking continues to inform her painting practice today.

Sara’s work is held in the permanent collections of the University of Birmingham, Worcester City Art Gallery and Jesus College, Cambridge. She has exhibited widely in the UK and the USA and worked with publishers and commercial clients including John Lewis, Rosenstiel’s, HarperCollins and Washington Green.

Sara lives and works in Worcestershire with her artist husband, Paul Powis, who is also newly represented by the gallery. paulpowisart

Welcome Paul Powis ! 🎉

It is our pleasure to announce the arrival of Paul Powis to the gallery.

Characterised by vibrant colour and bold aesthetics, Paul’s paintings are invigorating statement pieces, offering new energy to any space in which they reside.

Though representational, his landscapes lean towards abstraction, using constructional spatial devices in the composition and use of subjective colour to describe space. Often choosing to set his landscapes in the early morning or late afternoon, his paintings are known for dramatically capturing long shadows as they rake over surrounding hills and fields.

Exhibiting extensively throughout his career, Paul has grown to become an internationally recognised artist with collections in America, Japan and Europe.

Having received a beautiful collection of work by Paul, stay posted to discover more this month.

🎨 All new work is available both in the gallery and on our website now.

Featured painting: ‘Early Morning’, acrylic on canvas by Paul Powis. £795.

SEAN DURKIN: ART FOR ALL!

~ Opens next Friday ~

We are delighted to announce 𝑺𝒆𝒂𝒏 𝑫𝒖𝒓𝒌𝒊𝒏: 𝑨𝒓𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑨𝒍𝒍!, the fifth solo show of original paintings, by British contemporary artist Sean Durkin.

Shining a light on Britain’s industrial past, Sean’s work brims with grit and the artist’s signature wry sense humour. Challenging preconceived notions of what and who merits being the subject of a painting, Sean’s interests lie in the collective struggles and merrymaking of ordinary working people.

Gallery Director Philip Short tells us:

“Sean masterfully resurrects and honours tales of British heritage with wit, warmth and a generous sense of community pride. To collect his work is to share in that heritage, paying homage to the past while celebrating the reach and bearing of contemporary art in the here and now.”

📩🔔 Preview catalogues are available upon request.

🎨 Join us from Friday the 2nd of October to experience Sean’s exclusive collection of original paintings.

🌅 An early viewing is advised to avoid disappointment.

We look forward to welcoming you soon!

It is a joy to formally welcome Scottish contemporary artist Jennifer Irvine, RGI RSW to the gallery. 🥂✨

Pairing rich, vivid colours with a profusion of pattern and shape, Jennifer’s work explores the interplay of light and shade to full, chromatic effect. Immersive and transportive, her work embraces a diverse range of subjects from intimate still life to vibrant sea and townscapes.

Working from her studio in Glasgow, and frequently from Argyll, Jennifer enjoys painting the sea and the ever-changing reflections of light on water. In the last few years she has spent time in France, Spain and Italy, being provided with inspiration and subject matter anew.

Beginning with a loose, expressive underdrawing, Jennifer uses brushes and palette knives to block in elements of the composition, building up layers of vibrant colour and tone that retain an uncanny realism and palpable sense of place.

Jennifer’s celebrated career has seen her election to the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (RGI) in 2015 and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW) in 2016, as well as awards including The David Cargill Award, The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Award, The Mark Greer Award and The Sir William Gillies Award.

We are delighted to be showing Jennifer’s work, which you can view now both in the gallery and on our website.

Featured painting: ‘Capileira Village, Evening, Alpujarra’, gouache and watercolour, 81cm x 81cm.

Hold the phone! ☎️ Ian Rawling’s ‘Red Rotary Telephone’ is currently turning heads in the gallery and the question we are most often asked? ‘Is it a photograph?’ We are of course delighted to report that no, this is an original pastel, created by an artist at the height of his powers.

With two of four new pastels by Ian snapped up as quickly as they arrived, be sure to visit our website or stop by the gallery to view his available work, including the arresting ‘Red Rotary Telephone’.
