A late fossil friday post, but better late then never!
Today (28/08/2026) at 11:30am a beautiful pearly white Pygocephalus brymboensis was found by our students Tiana and Jamie, this 314 Mya semi-articulated critter is an excellent addition to our collection, and will provide interesting insight in to how fossils form here at the Brymbo Fossil Forest!

With a partial tail, partial legs, partial antenna and partial underside this specimen joins our ranks as one of our top fossil finds of the 2026 Student Summer Digs!

Let’s go back in time to look at past excavation years at Brymbo Fossil Forest !

Did you know that the fossils were first studied by Palaeontologists in 2003 during coal mining !!

BFF veteran, great friend, BSc student and all round good egg .tyler has spent the last two weeks logging over 300 Calamites fossils on the surface of the fossil forests sandstone units. He has gone slightly loopy and produced this appreciation post (including his awesome original artwork)

Over the past week one-man JCB has deftly excavated a huge Lepidodendron trunk found by the guys in this year's student block two. This trunk appears to be a large lycopod that was swept in with the catastrophic storm and jammed in the river channel we are now working on. A fabulous find and great work!

Hot rock removal tips from BFF fixtures & that you didn't know you needed!

It's massive rock pervs! This week we have an absolute Humdinger: found by visiting student Anne Elise Basten this is a beautiful fossil of a carboniferous millipede! While not as big as the GOAT Arthropleura, Acantherpestes was pretty rad with punk spikes on every segment. This is a huge find for us as it proves terrestrial arthropods were present on the site and can be fossilised here! We are obviously super stoked.
