As part of our Four Rivers Restoration Project, we’ve been connecting with water monitoring groups where they exist in East Suffolk, and helping new groups get started where they don’t. The data these groups collect is vital; forming a full picture of the river and highlighting where action most needs to be taken.

On the Blyth volunteers are testing for a number of measures including phosphates, nitrates, ammonia, dissolved solids and now E.coli, as well as conducting visual observations of the river. The picture this testing has revealed is bleak, with over half of sites tested showing significant pollution issues.

See the full results at laxfield-pc.gov.uk/parish-council/river-blyth-pollution-reports

However the story doesn’t end here. We’re working with local community groups, councils, landowners, and other stakeholders to bring back a thriving River Blyth. Stay tuned to OurRivers.TV to see how we get on.

We had a fantastic time yesterday at the Suffolk in Motion EV experience day!

It was a great opportunity to try out e-bikes and electric vehicles, meet local community groups, and find out more about green travel options in Suffolk. Green travel is a great way to make a difference both for our planet and local community, and our team on the ground couldn't agree more; travelling to the event itself by bike, EV, and Park & Ride 💚

Huge thanks to everyone who came to talk to us about our work, played a game of Climate Jenga, and overall made it such a brilliant day! Special shout out to our stall neighbours from The Ramblers and the Community Rail Partnership.

What local events would you like to see the team at next?

Six years ago, concerned about the health of our rivers, we started our journey with water testing along the Deben. We were just a small team and we didn’t know what we’d find or how DCC would grow. Now we have a whole movement of people behind us. We have over 60 volunteers helping us test for multiple pollutants along the Deben and its tributaries, we’ve helped multiple local groups get started with testing on their own rivers, and crucially we now have a way to turn all of this data into action.

The Four Rivers Restoration Project is working along the Alde & Ore, Blyth, Deben, and Waveney to bring back thriving river landscapes; increasing biodiversity, improving water quality, and reducing flooding. If you’re a local landowner along one of these four rivers and you’re interested in getting involved in the project we’d love to hear from you. Get in touch at [email protected] today!

We've been closely monitoring this pollution incident at Charsfield over the past weeks.

On Friday 25th September a builder's van came off the road and ended upside down in Potsford Brook. Oil from the sump flowed out into the dry ditch creating a sizeable spill.

Action by our volunteers and local Parish Council in reporting the incident to the Environment Agency resulted in a clean-up being started just before the 7th October rainfall.

However, the time taken from incident report to clean up was, in our opinion, rather too long, with volunteers having to contact the EA multiple times to prompt timely action. We would like to see improvements to EA Hotline reporting and follow up for time critical incidents such as this, however if you see an incident we still strongly encourage you to report it to the EA.

October 5th Water Testing Results are in 📢

💧E.coli
In the non-tidal section, there were low E.coli levels in much of the river away from the Anglian Water STWs, with the section above Easton continuing to show almost no E.coli pollution.
For the Fynn and Lark the picture is broadly similar, however in a few locations levels were higher than expected, notably in Grundisburgh.
In the tidal section, levels were also low, although as usual both Kirton and Martlesham Creek STWs show problems.
At Debenham and above there was a record number of dry sites reported. E.coli levels, at those where water was present, were however lower than in previous months.

💧Phosphate
Low flow and record low river levels tend to concentrate this chemical pollutant. That said in the non-tidal Deben phosphate levels at most sites sit at or near "healthy river" levels.
In the Fynn/Lark section, phosphate levels are somewhat higher and we continue to make the case for phosphate stripping investment here.
In the tidal section, pollution in Woodbridge/Melton is above guideline levels, even at high tide. The inland Kirton STW continues to be a high emitter and recent one-off tests in the non-tidal backwaters at Falkenham shows phosphate pollution over 15 times the acceptable level
In the Debenham area, phosphate levels were lower than reported in September, showing the positive impact of phosphate removal.

💧Nitrate
Nitrate levels continue to be relatively low for the time of year due to little rainfall and almost no run-off from agricultural land and highways, with spikes only evident at and just below the STWs.

💧Ammonia
Across the Deben catchment, ammonia levels are below 0.5 ppm in most places indicating relatively good river health, although we continue to see spikes at STWs. A tidal spike at Wilford Bridge (1.07 ppm) is concerning as this is some way from any pollution emitter and is to be investigated further.
