Did you know, the earliest recorded pelican fossil found in France was a 30-million-year-old skull and that there are eight species of this magnificent bird residing in every continent, bar Antarctica. The huge pouch that dangles from a pelican's bill is called the gular pouch, or gular sac, which is actually fibrous skin and is used to capture food by expanding and contracting much like a fishing net. Pelicans have what is known as totipalmate feet - that is webbing connecting all four toes and they predominantly breathe through their mouths. With a built-in water desalination gland in their closed hidden nostrils, excess salts are removed from their bloodstream - perfect for a life on the sea!
