The Friends of the Windsor & Royal Borough Museum are a dedicated group of history enthusiasts committed to celebrating and preserving our local heritage. We play a crucial role in funding unique objects that enrich the Museum’s impressive collection, ensuring that our history remains vibrant and accessible. Beyond that, we champion the Museum through fundraising, volunteering, organizing events,

leading tours, providing interesting talks, and supporting vital work at the Museum’s Archive Store. With over 60 passionate members, we’re always looking to welcome more people who share our love for local history and community.

We are saddened to share the passing earlier this year of Pamela Marson, a dedicated and much-valued member of the Friends of the Museum.

Pamela was a true stalwart of the organisation, whose commitment and passion played an important role in supporting the Museum and the Group over many years. It is a great sadness that she will not see the Museum’s next chapter come to fruition soon.

You can read more about Pamela here: https://friendsofwindsormuseum.org/in-memoriam/pamela-marson/

We also share an extract from the Maidenhead Advertiser (7 June 2009), marking the moment the Museum’s return to the Guildhall was confirmed - an occasion close to Pamela’s heart.

Our thoughts are with her family and friends.

A UNIQUE PIECE OF WINDSOR’S PAST

Did you know a piece of WWII history lies in our Museum in Windsor Guildhall? On 17th February 1941, a N**i Dornier 17z bomber—nicknamed the "Flying Pencil"—crashed near Oakley Court after being attacked by a night fighter. Despite the report that “The flames lit up the night sky”, two of the crew survived. A piece of the wreckage, an oxygen valve, is now preserved in the Museum as a reminder of that unforgettable event. A grandson of one of the crew visited our Museum recently and was overjoyed to see it and hear more about the incident from our Volunteers.

Discover it and more about Windsor’s past and how you can help preserve it for future generations! Learn more: https://friendsofwindsormuseum.org/sponsor-an-object/

✨ A Special Opening for a Sparkling Afternoon! ✨

To celebrate Windsor’s Christmas Lights Switch-on, the Museum will be open this Saturday, 15 November, from noon — and it’s the perfect excuse to pop in for some festive inspiration.

Looking for meaningful, unique gifts this year? During your visit to the Museum, you can:

⭐ Create a personalised Christmas badge for someone special.
✨ Sponsor a museum object in a loved one’s name — a gift with real history behind it.

📘Buy the new Windlesora 39 from the Windsor Local History Group.

Outside, the town will be buzzing with festive cheer: live performances from 3pm, Christmas market stalls and children’s rides throughout the centre, and of course the magical Lights Switch-on at 5:30pm right outside Windsor Castle.

Sponsor an Object: Bronze Age Gold Bracelet

Step back more than three millennia and discover one of the most remarkable treasures in our collection — a rare Bronze Age gold bracelet, crafted between 1300–1150 BC.

Made from exquisitely twisted gold, and accompanied by five delicate gold rings, this piece was uncovered by a metal detectorist just east of Windsor in 2009. Its gold likely originated from Wales or Ireland, and only three or four similar bracelets have ever been found, all in southern England — making this an exceptionally rare survival of early craftsmanship.

The rings may once have been worn as body adornment or hair decoration, treasured possessions that signified the status of their owners. No human remains were found with the jewellery — a reminder that, during this period, people were cremated. It is possible that these precious items were buried as an offering to the gods, a gift from a community seeking favour or protection.

By sponsoring this object, you help us preserve and share Windsor’s deep and ancient past with future generations.

🎉 Fantastic News for the Museum! 🎉

We’re delighted to find out that the Museum has been awarded £65,895 from the national Museum Renewal Fund 2025!

This fund supports museums owned or directly maintained by local authorities, helping safeguard the community impact and engagement that public access to museums makes possible.

These additional funds will enable the Museum to carry out important projects to grow visitor numbers and strengthen the Museum’s long-term sustainability—initiatives that would not have been possible without this support. Work is expected to begin immediately and be completed in early 2026.

This achievement is a real testament to the dedication and outstanding work of our Museum team. Huge congratulations to Steph, Becky and Alex for their commitment and success in securing this funding! 👏
