On this day, 30th August 1548, Katherine Parr gave birth to her only child at Sudeley Castle.

After four marriages and years spent at the heart of the Tudor court, 36-year-old Katherine finally became a mother to a daughter, Mary Seymour.

She had moved to Sudeley earlier that year with her fourth husband Thomas Seymour, making the castle her home for what should have been a hopeful new chapter away from the pressures of court.

But joy unfortunately turned to tragedy quickly.

Following Mary's birth, Katherine became seriously ill, and just six days later, on 5th September, she died here at Sudeley.

Mary’s own story remains one of Tudor history’s mysteries. After the ex*****on of her father the following year, records of her become increasingly scarce and disappear altogether after 1550.

More than 475 years later, Katherine still rests here, in the Chapel, St Mary’s Church. You can visit her tomb on your visit.

This week, from Tuesday 1st- Sunday 6th September, Queen Katherine Parr: A Royal Legacy at Sudeley Castle will explore her life beyond the familiar story of Henry VIII’s surviving wife, including her writing, faith, relationships, motherhood and final days at Sudeley.
