It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George Dunn DFC, a former Second World War Bomber Command pilot, who died yesterday at the age of 103.

During his service, George completed 44 operational missions—30 in the Halifax and 14 in the de Havilland Mosquito.

George was a valued and regular visitor to the hangar, and appeared in Inside the Spitfire Factory, where we learned that he delivered Spitfire MJ755 to the Greek Air Force in 1947.

He will be greatly missed by all at the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar.

Rest in peace George, you will never be forgotten.

Fresh from her annual checks, she’s all set for another incredible season of experience flights with Flyaspitfire.com — kicking off this very weekend!

We’re also thrilled to announce she’ll be displaying at the Headcorn International Airshow on 27th–28th June, flying alongside our Buchon, Spitfire, and Hurricane.

We can’t wait — and we know she’ll be turning heads as always. A true crowd favourite 💙

Yesterday we hosted our very first Warbird Photography Session with leading aviation photographer Darren Harbar Photography-Aviation — and what an incredible turnout it was!

Participants enjoyed rare close-up access to our collection of historic warbirds, alongside outdoor photo opportunities featuring our Mustang, Buchon, and Spitfire, joined by fantastic reenactors who really brought the scene to life.

Inside the restoration hangar, things took on a whole new atmosphere. With dramatic, colourful lighting illuminating our latest Spitfire restoration, the space was transformed into a vibrant canvas of shifting colours and striking aircraft silhouettes — a truly unique photographic experience.

We wrapped up the evening with a special night shoot, as our three aircraft outside powered up. With plenty of room around each aircraft, photographers had the freedom to capture a wide range of creative angles under the night sky.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us — we loved having you there! We’re already looking forward to announcing our next photography session, so keep an eye on our socials for updates.

✈️ ‘Marinell’ returns to Biggin Hill

Northwind Aviation's 1944 P-51 Mustang arriving back at the Heritage Hangar after an afternoon over the English countryside 🇬🇧

🛩️ One of a few airworthy Mustangs with true combat history, she flew with the 504th FS, 339th FG, Eighth Air Force — piloted by 24-year-old Capt. Bradford Stevens, who named her after a girl he met during training.

💥 On 13 Aug 1944, Stevens flew a bombing and strafing mission in France. Later that day, Lt. Winkelman flew ‘Marinell’ on a dive-bomb and sweep over Beauvais — where she was shot down at 18:30 near Feuquières.

🔥 In her 45 days of service, she claimed 4 enemy aircraft (2 FW-190s, 2 Me-109s).

Mustang Monday ✈️

Northwind Flying Co's beautiful 1944 North American P‑51 Mustang “Marinell” taxiing back to the hangar last week.

“Marinell” is one of only a handful of airworthy Mustangs with genuine combat history. She served with the 504th Fighter Squadron of the 339th Fighter Group, part of the famous United States Eighth Air Force during the Second World War.

On the morning of 13 August 1944, 24-year-old Captain Bradley Stevens took the controls of this very aircraft, flying bombing and strafing missions against railway targets in France. Later that same day, Lieutenant Winkelman of the same squadron flew “Marinell” on a dive-bombing and area-sweep mission to Beauvais, France. During that mission he was shot down at approximately 18:30 in the area of Feuquières while flying the aircraft.

“Marinell” served with the unit for just 45 days, until her loss. In that short period she had already been credited with four enemy aircraft destroyed—two Focke‑Wulf Fw 190 fighters and two Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighters.

Today, it is a real privilege to maintain this historic Mustang at our Biggin Hill facility. She is not the only Mustang in our hangars either—joined by the 1944 Mustangs “Moonbeam McSwine” and WD-C.

Over the past few weeks, Spitfire PT879 from the Hangar 11 Collection has been with us for her annual maintenance checks, which were successfully completed this week. She has now returned to her home base at North Weald.

Also known as “The Russian Spitfire,” PT879 is one of our restoration projects that we completed in October 2020. It’s always a pleasure to welcome our past restorations back into the facility and see them continuing to fly. ✈️

✈️🎉 5th March – 90 Years of the Spitfire 🎉✈️

On this day, 5th March 1936, the legendary Spitfire took to the skies for the very first time from Eastleigh Aerodrome — now known as Southampton Airport.

The very first aircraft, the Supermarine Type 300, registration K5054, began construction in December 1934 and flew just over a year later. At the controls was Chief Test Pilot Joseph “Mutt” Summers, who famously declared after landing: “Don’t touch anything!”

Over the following months, minor refinements and flight trials shaped the Type 300 into what would become the production Mk I Spitfire.

The Air Ministry was so impressed that on 3rd June 1936, a contract for 310 Spitfires was issued. K5054 went on to serve as the test aircraft for the improved Mk II and Mk III variants.

By the end of production, 24 marks (variants) of Spitfire had been created, with an incredible over 22,000 aircraft built — securing its place as one of the most iconic fighters in aviation history.

Here at the Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar, we are proud to have restored over 15 Spitfires across various marks. To celebrate the Spitfire’s 90th birthday, we’re sharing a selection of aircraft we’ve restored and maintained over the years.
