These photos are from a recent exhibition research visit to beautiful in the east of the Epping Forest District.

They show the interior and exterior of St. Mary the Virgin Church in the centre of the village. A plaque inside the church commemorates the American 391st Bombardment Group who were based at RAF Matching (Matching Green) during the Second World War. They flew Martin B-26 Marauders.

The plaque in the church reads: "This plaque is placed here by the surviving officers and men of the group, in memory of our friends who did not come back, and in appreciation of your friendship, with the hope that Americans and Englishmen will continue to stand together in the great trials still to come for free men."

Happy Day! This rather strange looking item is an old penny that’s been made into a love token! It dates to the early 1600s and was found near North Weald by a metal detectorist.
Coins were bent and presented to loved ones as a sign of affection. There is a small hole pierced at the 'top' of the coin that suggests that the coin was worn as a pendant.

We are excited to announce the opening of our new exhibition, "Calm and Courageous: The Second World War Home Front in the Epping Forest District," on Saturday, 5 April, marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe.

This exhibition will showcase a variety of objects, stories, and oral histories from the museum’s collection, along with contributions from local history societies, community groups, and other heritage sites in the district. It will highlight the experiences of individuals whose lives were changed dramatically when war broke out in September 1939.

One of the featured items is a post-war ration book that was used by a resident of Nursery Road in from 1953 to 1954. Their local store for purchasing eggs, fats, cheese, bacon, and sugar was International Stores in , while their butcher was W. Penton located in St John's Parade on High Road in .
