A day out at Highland Archive Centre with ARCH Highland, scanning some rather large maps of the Braemore estate, on temporary loan to us at the museum. 🗺️

A massive thank you to Peter Newling for allowing us to create high-quality digital scans of these fascinating maps, which will be invaluable for our preservation of the local history
This allows the maps to be studied without fear of damage or further wear and tear.

We would also like to Thank ARCH for allowing us to be part of this project. We appreciate the time and effort it has taken to bring this fabulous resource to the Highlands.

There’s nothing quite like getting up close with historic maps — even when they take up the whole room! 😄

🎨 Young Curators are back!

After the summer holidays, our Young Curators were straight back into action, and we’re off the starting line with a fantastic workshop at An Talla Solais.

The group explored how to choose artwork for an exhibition, different artistic mediums, and the practicalities of displaying and hanging work. All valuable preparation for their first ever commission...curating the artwork from Ullapool High School for display as part of Art Week. 🖼️

It’s another chance for the group to put their ideas into practice while building practical, transferable skills in exhibition planning, decision-making, teamwork, communication and creative problem-solving, the kind of skills that can take them well beyond the museum.

Now onto the exciting bit choosing, creating and curating!

✨ Big news for our Young Curators Club! ✨

We're absolutely delighted to announce that we've been awarded £11,800 from Museums Galleries Scotland's Small Grants Fund to support the next chapter of our Young Curators Club.

At Ullapool Museum, our Young Curators programme is all about meeting young people where they are. To complement traditional classroom learning, we build projects around their interests while weaving in practical, creative and everyday skills from research, interviewing and storytelling to recording, editing, teamwork and public speaking.

Learning becomes something they do, not just something they're taught.

A huge thank you to Museums Galleries Scotland for supporting this project, and to our brilliant Young Curators, whose enthusiasm, imagination and curiosity continue to inspire us every week.

We can't wait to share the stories and perhaps a few spooky surprises with you! 👀🎧

🎉We’re pleased to announce that £129,584 has been awarded to 12 museum organisations across the country through the latest round of our Small Grants Fund.

From launching a new podcast to upgrading display cases, the awarded projects aim to enhance audience engagement, education, and accessibility.

🎉 We were delighted to welcome the Penn State University Landscape Architecture students back to Ullapool Museum for the second year in a row as part of their summer exchange programme.

As part of their Highland Design Project, the students shared their inspiring ideas and innovative designs, exploring ways to help address some of the challenges faced by small, independent highland museums. Their enthusiasm, creativity, and expertise are invaluable, and we're incredibly grateful to benefit from their fresh perspectives.

Both Ullapool Museum and Cromarty Courthouse Museum have gained so much from this collaboration, and we're excited to see how some of these ideas might help shape our future.

A huge thank you to all the students and staff involved at UHI Centre for History and to Kevin at Ullapool Harbour for his ad hoc chat with the students. We hope this fantastic partnership continues to grow and flourish for many years to come!

🎉 Meal-a-naidheachd mòr to the Gaelic Primary 4–5 class at Ullapool Primary School on their fantastic success at the Inverness Provincial Mòd, where they won the Walking Song category! 👏🏆

We were very fortunate to experience their talent firsthand on Tuesday when they visited the museum and treated us to a preview of their award-winning performance. As well as sharing their beautiful waulking song, the pupils also presented some of their poetry entries, showcasing the creativity, confidence, and enthusiasm that have clearly contributed to their success.

Bha sinn glè fhortanach to welcome them to the museum and hear their performance before the competition. It was a real pleasure to see and hear such enthusiasm for Gaelic language and culture.

Math fhèin dhuibh uile! We are delighted to see your hard work and dedication recognised at the Mòd and wish you every success in the future. 🌟

We're delighted that our Young Curators Club has been shortlisted for the Kids in Museums Best Museum Careers Initiative Award.

As a small independent rural museum with limited resources, we've shown that meaningful museum careers engagement doesn't require a big budget. It requires trust, opportunity and belief in young people.

Through our learning through action approach, young people have developed skills in curation, research, communication, teamwork, project planning and creative thinking by working on real projects with real impact.

This achievement reflects the power of collaboration in rural communities. Our Young Curators Club has been made possible through strong partnerships with DYW West Highland Ullapool Youth Development and Ullapool High School, demonstrating what can be achieved when organisations work together to create opportunities for young people.

This recognition is a testament to what young people can achieve when they're given the chance to lead, create and contribute to their communities heritage.

A massive congratulations to the other three museums who have also been shortlisted in this category, we are thrilled to be up against some enormous big hitters such as London Transport Museum Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery and Charleston Trust

We're incredibly proud of everything our Young Curators have accomplished and grateful to all our partners who have helped make it possible.

⚽ 100+ Years of Football in Ullapool ⚽

As Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 flies the flag at the World Cup, we're taking a look back at some football stars a little closer to home!

These five photographs, spanning the 1920s to the 1970s, show just a few of the generations who have kicked a ball, pulled on a team jersey, and battled it out on pitches around Ullapool over the last century. Long before VAR, sponsorship deals, and social media highlights, there was football in Lochbroom, played for pride, community, and the love of the game.

While Scotland's players are chasing World Cup glory in front of millions, it's worth remembering that every football story starts somewhere. For many Highland players, it started on muddy local pitches, with teammates who were also neighbours, classmates, workmates, and friends.
