MUSEUM OPENING 2024

Because of ongoing upgrades to our fire safety and electrical systems, we are sorry but opening this year will be delayed by several months.

The safety and wellbeing of our visitors is paramount and this essential work must be completed before we can welcome you back into the museum.

Our fundraising bookshop will remain open every Saturday from 10-2

Thank you

Dave Gibbons, Chair of Trustees.

📆Refurbished Great Torrington Bellcote to be reinstated on Sunday 8th October

The Bellcote structure removed from Great Torrington Market House has now been refurbished and will be put back in position in the early hours of Sunday Morning.

🏗 In an operation contractors expect to take 2-3 hours a crane will be used to lift the Bellcote back to the roof area of the building. Sunday was chosen to keep disruption to a minimum as shops, cafes, and other businesses will be closed for the day.

🚧Appropriate measures will be in place to cordon off the area just in front of the building, but we are asking people to stay clear of the operation to allow contractors to complete their task safely, and without interruption. Thanks for your cooperation🚧

Our Story

Great Torrington Heritage Museum is a small, friendly museum, housed in the in The Market House (entrance next to the Pannier Market). It is run entirely by volunteers. The museum has many fascinating exhibits and reflects the diverse history of this ancient market town. Thanks to the town council, we now have a permanent home in the Market House, 14 South St, Great Torrington, Torrington EX38 8AF, (01805 938008).

After the closure of the attraction, The 1646 Experience in the town a major part of the responsibility for educating the world about the interesting, varied and colourful history of the town, has fallen on the museum. We hope that the by-product of our efforts will be to attract many more visitors to the town and help reinvigorate local business and hopefully create more jobs and encourage our young people to be stay in a town they can be proud of.

We need help with this, we need new ideas, we need money, we need volunteers, we need an open minded approach, we need vision! This museum could be the hub the catalyst for a brighter future.
